Style meets versatility

Audio-Technica's ATH-M series is a line of closed-back, studio-quality monitoring headphones and includes models to suit any budget. What all of these headphones have in common is a sturdy construction, a high-resolution sound with a slight emphasis on the bass and treble frequencies, and a circumaural design to ensure a high level of comfort even during longer sessions. The ATH-M models also have relatively low impedance values, which means they can provide a reasonable level of volume even when used with mobile devices that perhaps lack the output power of a headphone amplifier or audio interface. These headphones are additionally suitable for DJs and for use in noisy environments thanks to their good sound isolation.

Audio-Technica ATH-M30X

Solid and reliable

The ATH-M30X model from Audio-Technica's ATH-M series features 40mm drivers and CCAW coils driven by neodymium magnets, delivering an impressive sound that can easily compete with much more expensive headphones. Unlike its "little" sibling, the ATH-M20X, the M30X model is foldable, making it ideal for use on the go. The headphones are steplessly adjustable, and the earcups are also generously padded and can be swivelled by 90°, allowing them to be set to any desired position. The left side has a fixed 3m cable ending in a 3.5mm mini-jack connector, and a threaded adapter for 6.3mm connections is included in the scope of delivery.

Extensive features without breaking the bank

The ATH-M30X's closed-back design and effective sound isolation make it the perfect companion for noisy recording sessions where - for example - the drum tracks are being recorded in the same room. At the same time, crosstalk is reduced during vocal recordings when the singer has the backing tracks turned up loud on their headphones. Thanks to their linear frequency response, these headphones also cut a fine figure in production and mixing applications. Excellent sound isolation and a good volume level are important for queuing tracks in noisy clubs, so DJs will doubtless also appreciate the ATH-M30X's circumaural design. Those looking for headphones to primarily enjoy listening to music will be pleased with the model's tight bass response and clear treble frequencies, both of which are impressive at this price point.

My favorite M-Series headphones!
Funeral Musician 23.01.2023
I have tried the ATH-M20x, the ATH-M25 (an old discontinued model), the ATH-M30x, the ATH-M40x, and the ATH-M50 (the older version without the letter “x”), and I liked the ATH-M30x the most. Granted, everybody's ears and their sound preferences are slightly different, but to me, the M30x sound the best. While neither of the M-series headphones are perfectly “flat”, to my ears, the M30x sound the most balanced. My second favorite model is the M20x, which sounds very similar but cannot be folded for storage and does not come with a carrying bag. The comfort is best on the latter two models as well because they are the lightest out of the range and have a slightly softer earpad covering material when compared to the M40x and the M50, on which the imitation leather is thicker and not as pliable. Next, I am going to focus solely on the M30x. The construction of the M30x is time-tested and has proven itself durable. I did not notice any cosmetic or structural defects. The cable seems tough enough to survive daily use, but is soft and flexible enough to lay flat on the ground and be easy to coil. Since the headphones are light, and do not grip the head overly tightly, they are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. The longest I have worn them without taking a single break was ten hours, and I did not experience any pain or discomfort. However, if the grip is still too tight for some, the headphones can be stretched around any object, be it a jar or a cardboard box, which is greater in width than the user's head, and left on it for a few days. The grip usually loosens up. The only criticism I have in terms of handling is that the size adjustment mechanism does not have any distinct size positions, nor even position markers, so you have to adjust it approximately, put the headphones on and correct the adjustment if needed, which can become especially annoying if the headphones are shared by two people with differently sized heads. To me, the Sony MDR-7506 size adjustment mechanism with numbered indentations is many times better. Happily, the sound quality of the ATH-M30x more than compensates for that shortcomming. Since neither of the frequencies stood out to me, I would say that the sound is well balanced. Even though the highs are very clear, sibilance is not a problem (for those who do not know, it is the annoying hissiness of the “s” sounds). The soundstage (or the size of the perceived space, in which the musicians appear to be playing) is quite large for closed-back-type headphones, and the imaging (or the ability to determine the position of each musician in that perceived space) is very impressive in this price range. For experiencing the clearest effect of that, Dolby Atmos is simply excellent! In short, if the lack of distinct size adjustment positions and a long, non-detachable cable is not an issue, I would highly recommend these headphones for either doing some studio work or just listening to your favorite tunes.

Gr
Poor sounding for distortion
Guit rocker 27.05.2021
I used this headphones with electric guitar and bass combos at home, and the overdrive/distortion/fuzz sounds are very poor. No subtility at all for the treble sounds. I can't manage any decent setups with the headphones on and have to play without them to hear any subtility.

AM
It's a good headphone
André M. Mastella 01.03.2022
I think it's an entry level, it does the job. It's a little bit tight, but closes the sound very well. The jacks (p2, p10) are ok, it seems good. With Guitar Rig 5 plus a Behringer U-Phoria UMC404HD you are gonna have fun. Nothing to complain.
Reccomend (and thanks Thomann)!!!

P
BIG difference between these and the M40 and M50, sound-wise
PS2020 18.02.2023
While the price for these is certainly appealing, as well as the confort and finish (still Audio-Technica so you know its built to last you decades), the big off-putting factor here is the sound. With the M30x headphones, you get virtually no bass, and as such the sound is thin and scratchy. It's certainly usable for DJs I guess, but for professional audio it really falls short.
