Great sound, good feel, just not right for me
boynamedlen 30.03.2020
At first, these strings feel a bit sticky but that goes away after a few days of playing. After that, they feel almost as smooth as glass. Fresh, they do sound bright, not "roundwounds bright" but definitely brighter than other flatwounds. Broken in, they still retain a good amount of overtones but, like all flats, the sound is mostly about the fundamental and a deep, yet punchy sound.

I bought this set because I was curious about the gauge and tension. Other flatwounds I've tried were too stiff for me, especially the E and A strings. To my fingers, the E and A strings feel similar to 100 and 80 in standard (nickel, XP) roundwounds, while the D an G strings feel a little bit looser.

I love the sound of broken-in (and almost dead) rounds and was hoping that Chromes would achieve this, while also not feeling and looking absolutely disgusting after a few months of frequent use. I don't have a habit of cleaning my strings and I have sweaty fingers, so go figure...

My main issue with them, and with flats in general, is that I struggle to play fast on them. I'm not a shredder by any means, but flatwounds always seems to grip my fingers too much, which makes it difficult to play fast-ish lines and fills.
The sound is also a bit too 'niche' for me. I love them for old school funk/soul and just warm and vintage tones in general, but they don't work for me for more modern, gritty tones. They do have bite but they sound too dry for that kind of sound, which shouldn't really be a surprise considering they are flatwounds.

All in all, these are great quality strings. I do recommend them if you have never tried flatwounds before or if you want flatwounds that are a bit brighter (for a while). I still have a set that I like to put on when I want a change, but I find myself always going back to roundwounds.

Flatwound strings

Mythical Flat strings for bass fretless, like having good maneuverability and quality: these strings cost a little more but they are well worth the expense. Clean sound and smoothness make these strings among the best existing for the Bass Freteless.
Pros: excellent sound and durability
Cons: Maybe a little too expensive.

F
Flatwounds that seem to fit any style
Fred739 20.09.2015
I was looking for flatwounds for my USA Fender P Bass. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, as I had always used round wounds, but wow, was I impressed! First thing I noticed was the great sound. Obviously new strings will always have a sparkle to them, but I wasn't expecting flatwounds to sounds so lively. Of course some of that sparkle fades after time, but does so in a smooth way and the nice harmonics and overall rich tones remain. They are so easy to play and almost buttery smooth on the fingers and their slinky nature makes bending easy, which is important to me. I think I've found my bass strings of choice. A friend of mine put a set of these on his squire P Bass and what an improvement it made.

Great strings.

Love these semi-light strings - perfect for slap and string-bending. And they don't shred my fingertips.

A
great flats
Anonymous 01.11.2016
Ive owned and played basses for longer than a lot of you have been alive but am new to flats. Chose chromes as i didn't want them to be dull and dead and i wasn't wrong.

the big pro for me is the minimal fret wear compared to round wound. I have an ancient fender jazz that really could do with a refret but the flats are keeping that wolf from my door and they feel and sound great. I have them on a really old EKO beatle bass and it nails Mackas tone.

What else can i say about strings other than they far exceeded my expectations.

A smooth different sounding string

These strings are so easy on the fingert tips compared to brighter strings. Great sound as well.

Lovely strings

This is my first set of flatwounds and I'm very happy with them. They give a very nice tone and easy on the fingers. They're definitely more subdued in the sense you don't get as much of a bite as regular style strings but that's a matter of preference. There's a much bassier tone instead. They seem like they'll last a very long time and they're very easy to clean
