Classic for sure, but still popular for good reason!
Michael12 10.12.2013
I have this pickup in the bridge and/or neck of three different guitars and I love it in all of them! This is a fantastic pickup!
Firstly, this pickup sounds very "Dimarzio". By that I mean that it has plenty of lower mid thickness with nice upper mid pick attack. It is great for thick chunky rhythm, but is without doubt, the best lead pickup available! This is the pickup that helps Adrian Smith achieve his signature screamy leads.
It is verysensitive to eq adjustments, and also takes on the signature tone of whatever guitar it sits in. It is incredibly rich in harmonics, and both chords and single notes are gorgeously rich!
Another feature of this pickup is versatility. The name is quite misleading. It is hot, but not extremely hot! Nowhere near as hot as a Gibson 500t or a Duncan distortion for example, but still hot enough for playing extreme metal as well as, if not better than any of the other pickups available! Roll back the volume, however, or use low gain, and this thing can do blues really well!
At the moment, this is one of the best pickups I have ever used!

Not for me unfortunately
Travis John 06.07.2023
I really wanted to like this pickup because it was what was in Kurt Cobain’s Jaguar and I really liked the sounds he got out of it live. Unfortunately I found the pickup to be much too thin and brittle for my liking with not enough bass response. For what it’s worth the pickup comes packaged nicely with instructions on how to wire it in a few different ways such as coil split and series/parallel, and it also comes with a necessary Allan key to adjust the height of the hex pieces. One thing to consider is that the screws and springs that are included with the pickup are for direct mounting the pickup to the wood of the guitar and are too long to use with a pickup ring. All in all a good product but just not for everyone.

Edit:
So after a while of playing this pickup I felt that something was off because all the reviews that I watched sounded nothing like the sounds I was getting and after reopening my guitar and double checking the wires I realised that I had actually made a mistake when wiring the pickup. I was using a wiring diagram from Seymour Duncan and I had completely forgotten to check if I had the colours right and it turns out I mixed the red and the black wire up because Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio use different colour conventions.

I’ve swapped the wires around and OH MY GOODNESS THIS PICKUP SCREAMS, pinch harmonics sound awesome and chugs sound thick and I’m so glad I didn’t decide to sell this pickup on.

E
Bright and Crunchy.
Edward5389 23.04.2014
Installed in the bridge position I love the sound this pup gives. Chords really stand out and are very bright and wide sounding. Turn up the gain and a G or D sounds enormous. Adjusting the height makes a significant difference in sensitivity, so you can adjust it to get the sound that you require. The only issue I has was that I made a mistake, I should have ordered the F spaced variant. With the top and bottom E string out of alignment of the outer poles it does make a difference. When I replaced it with the F spaced version a week later the guitar sounded perfect. Highly recommended pick up.

A
One of the best all rounders I've ever used on my guitar
Anonymous 27.05.2014
I was very pleased with this pickup. I bought it for my Epiphone Les Paul as I wanted something with a little more bite that the stock pups. It does the job nicely. The sound it gives is loud, punchy and fat on a crunch channel and beautifully warm and smooth on the clean channel. It fits in very well with almost any genre of music and the loud output means you don't need to use all that much gain to get a really good tone for playing heavy metal. Buy it: you will not regret it.

For any passive humbucker fan, there is no better solution, no matter what genre you are looking for.
