SEM filter from Doepfer
Jonathan64 11.09.2013
Doepfer now make a vast range of different filters, each with a different character. Many of them are based on "classic" filters from old analogue synths by such famous manufacturers as Moog and Oberheim, and this module is an example of the Oberheim SEM filter. It provides high and low pass outputs and a band pass too, and by mixing the first two a notch filter effect is available. Doepfer state on their website that the filter does not self-oscillate (in keeping with the original model it is based on) but there is a simple modification that you can do which will provide this facility if you want to. Doepfer are actually very good at publishing suggested modifications to some of their modules, with the the proviso, of course, that you will void the warranty if you do modify the equipment. In my opinion this is one filter that every modular set up should have, not least for it's ability to introduce a pleasant mild distortion to the sound when overdriven.

Ha
a very good and affordable filte
Henri aus B. 08.07.2013
Hi there,

the A-106-5 sem filter is a nice and cheap filter from Doepfer. One of the its great advantage is that it offers over most competitors is its ability to act as a High pass, Low pass, Band pass and Notch Filter ! not that common in that price range.

in terms of sound colours, this filter deserves is Oberheim nickname and definitely produce some sweet and warm tones. ideal for pads and strings like sounds.

in my small setup it sits next to a doepfer a 108 moog filter. both are really nice and i have to say they complete each other quite well !

well... i really like this filter so far !

I had some problems with it, it's on warranty repair, I'll see when I get it back if the problems are solved (clicks and other weird stuff happened, like a short circuit inside the module...). but he sound is very good, not a self-oscilliant filter, more of a smooth one, very good for drums I think, and/or to filter the sounds coming from external mics or radio music module. For a synth voice I always prefer a 24db ;)

Good for the price

Sounds good but doesn't really hold its ground next to pricier eurorack filters. Has an SEM vibe but obviously doesn't sound identical. Would recommend for someone getting into eurorack on a budget like I was.

Natural sounding filter

Very smooth filter and very easy to use. The filter does not self resonate but has a warm soft peak. The input will overdrive so a meaner side to the filter can be pushed forward too. A very reasonable price and very fast and pain free delivery. Thanks Thomann

Great sound to the resonance/drive. The build is great and it's nice it has two cv inputs. However I wouldn't get this as the only MMF filter in my rack, but as an alternative MMF, because the mix knob when set to LP will bleed some HP noise through.

Warm and rounded

I bought the a106-5 without high hopes for it, but it is capable of some really nice warm tones. Overdriving it especially can be beautiful and it responds really well to modulation. Having two audio outputs also means can create a feedback path to the the cutoff cv in for self modulation (I like using the bandpass to modulate cutoff and take the audio from the lowpass for instance).

Great sounding filter
Ian3185 04.07.2014
A very nice sounding filter, pleased I have this in my set up. I have lots of synths, but I'm very new to modular. So far I have been very impressed with the doepfer modules. 1 because they sound good, but 2 because they are also pretty good value for money.

Great SEM-filter

It sounds like a SEM to my ears. I am sure more pricey options can get you "closer" or with slightly less measurable noise, but this is an excellent sounding filter.
