Great strings, but not my personal faves.
Nadz 06.08.2015
I'm not what you would call a "Bass Player", I don't know that much about Bass gear etc, but I do regularly use a Squier Jaguar Bass for recording with (I am usually a guitarist or singer rather than Bass).

I was trying to achieve a particular sound for my bass, pronounced mids and a nicely defined top-end. That's the best way I can describe it, Bass players might call it differently, but I was after a kind of Justin Chancellor / Les Claypool direction.

A Bass Player friend of mine recommended I try these Hi Beams and the Ernie Ball Slinky set (blue packaging), and after trying both sets out, I found the EB's much more to my liking.

That's not to say these DR's weren't good, they were great! I put these on the Bass first and the difference from the last, thicker strings was great. I almost settled for these but curiosity got the better of me and I tried the EB's out and they were just that bit more to my liking.

These strings are definitely for anyone who wants a clear, bell-like tone, they reminded me a bit of a Piano, if that makes any sense? But my personal opinion is the Ernie Balls were slightly clearer with a more defined high-end response.

J
My favourite strings
Jon-Inge 04.02.2022
My favourite bass strings. They sound lovely and lively from the start and has a quite long lifetime . The surface of these strings are not as raspy and coarse as some other steel round-wounds, like Dunlop and Fat Beams. The round core makes the strings a little softer and more flexible than strings with a hex core. For me, these are the reference I compare other strings towards. Top bass strings!

Just the best.

Right.

Pro, then semi pro bass player. Walked into my 1st session in 1987 aged 17, still recoding and playing live now.
I worked my way through a bunch of brands and settled on these.
I used Rotosound, Dean Markley, Ernie Ball, I cant remember what else and the found these in the mid 90's.
I find them to be really reliable & consistent, bright yet deep, tight & full.
I like the consistent gap between them in gauge, i.e always .2

I match the gauge of stings up to the thickness of each neck - Precisions & Jazz's usually 105- 45's & Ibanez/ESP et al. 100's - 40's. This will vary a little bit.

It's just how I do it, no idea about others.

I try other stings as they come along but always come back to these and now I have been using them for coming on 30yrs. They are defiantly are part of the sound that I am paid to produce (which is still amazing to me), and I have a lot to thank them for.

The only time I move away is for flat wounds.

Bright sound

If you are after a bright punchy sound these are the strings. Sometimes they are too bright - so tone down. I find they need less frequent cleaning than some other makes before they loose and vibrance.

Best Roundwound I've Found.
Graham3281 02.03.2024
Love the tone, feel and longevity of these DR Hi Beams. Been playing bass for over 50 years and tried/used many brands. I have been a long time user of Rotosound RS66 Roundwounds, which are a classic bass string which I still use on many basses. However I am happy to spend approx 50% extra on these DRs for my higher end basses. They seem to last a little longer, the tension suits me and they feel a bit smoother under the fingers too. Best roundwounds I have found
