I got these to replace 12AX7's and deliberately reduce the gain in my amp. 12AX7's have a Mu (Gain) of 100. 12AY7's have a Mu (Gain) of 43.75. 12AT7's have a Mu (Gain) of 60.5. 12AU7's have a Mu (Gain) of 16.94. It is very simple to unplug any of these and substitute them. I chose the second lowest gain because the amp was really over doing the distortion for the sound I want. There is nothing wrong with the amp, or the tubes. Replacing V1, the first valve, has the most dramatic effect. It all comes down to the sound each of us likes best! It's quite easy to put back the originals if you don't like the sound.

Perfect for lowering the input gain in tube amps
Cesar593 08.04.2018
I have used this tube to replace a 12ax7 in the input stage of a tube amp and, as a result, obtained a more clearer and distortion free sound. Ever been unsatisfied with the grinding sound of your amp, never being able to get a true clean rithm sound? Well, a 12ay7 may be the solution! It worked with my amp.

Sounds good

Nothing much to say. Sounds good in my V1 of Egnater Tweaker 15 head into a Jensen Blackbird. I play singlecoils. Shimmer is there but then again I also had it with the 12AX7. This AY7 maybe is a bit less agressive, a bit more round, not as hard.

Low gain, high quality
GPGP 01.02.2020
This is a low gain tube which I got for experimenting with gain structures on the Hot Rod Deluxe. I had it in the V1 position where it drastically changes and lowers the gain structure - good if you're looking for a very clean channel. It's not one that's very commonly used, but it has its uses in specific applications.

Wonderful tubes

I have switched the preamp 12AX7 stock tubes of my Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue with these. I play a lot of clean and these sound warm and rounded. I am really in love with how they sound.

headroom
AndersE 12.05.2014
I bought this tube to swap out the 12ax7 in v1 on my fender blues deville. It gave the amp more headroom and now it sounds great. I can recommend this swap!
