Makes guitar with EMGs/Blackouts more versatile
Jeorgius 02.03.2022
Adds variation to the tone – makes active humbucker sound thinner, closer to single coil sound, though it doesn't sound exactly like single coil or coil-split. While you add the effect, your sound gets more lows and highs, and your mid frequencies start to "travel". I rolled the knob mostly to 6-8/10, since rolling further results in way too much highs. If you have space for tone knob as well, you're gonna need it in some cases, especially when reaching 9-10/10 effect.

Although it doesn't sound exactly like a single coil, the effect is quite nice – I tried to obtain the same result using EQs in my DAW, but didn't reach the sound as natural as this expander gives. And the results I've got with it are quiet impressive – I've dialed in some beautiful surf rock and funk tones. Would surely install it on my next guitar with EMGs/Blackouts

Great addition to your emg pickups
Anonymous 10.02.2015
I bought this for a Stratocaster that I had fitted EMG pickups to. I found the tone control with EMG's redundant so I removed the tone control and use this EMG expander instead. This decision expanded the versatility of my Stratocaster and allowed me to get tones that I could not get before. EMG use a quick-connect system this allows you to install the EXG without having to solder or de-solder the pickups. This meant that I could install the exg in about 10 minutes. The power requirements of the exg are the same as the 9V for the pickups. I didn't notice any decrease in battery life whilst using the exg.

Overpriced but solid
Bucket 18.09.2024
It feels solid, the turning feels smooth.
They don't sell a long shaft version and I think that's a big shame.
Out of their three "exotic" tonal controls, this one is especially interesting for humbuckers. And yet we cannot get one with a long shaft!
I honestly think you're paying too much for what the parts cost of these things are, you mostly pay for development costs and profit greed.
Maybe someone figured out how to build one of these from parts themselves, but I haven't seen this specific EQ control anywhere else, aside from simply having a 3 band EQ onboard.
