Great For Jazz
Martyn T. 18.06.2015
I've just changed the originally supplied strings on my Modern Player Fender Jazz to these strings, and to my taste a substantial improvement, as I like a deep mellow tone.
Flatwounds traditionally have the reputation of having less sustain, but I haven't found that, although it could be that the old strings had gradually deadened as they gunged up.
I've usually used Rotosound flats in the past on both fretted and unfretted basses, and I prefer the sound that I get from the Fenders, although the only direct comparison I can make is with my Maya fretless with old Rotosound nylonwrapped. For what it's worth, I have Fender nylon wrapped strings on my acoustic bass which although not designed for acoustics, do work, but aren't totally flat and so generate fret noise. The nylon Fenders don't sound as good as these stainless ones, but that could be down to magnetic versus piezo pickups.

On a general note, I've always found that flatwounds last much much longer than wirewounds, aand are kinder to frets and to fretboards (especially fretless fretboards).

I can thoroughly recommend these strings as long as you are not looking for a 'cutting through' bright tone

AY
Cheapest and yet quality flats
Antonis Y. 22.11.2019
I'd purchased this set to put on a precision, and got the gauge for D tuning. These were the cheapest flatwound strings available but I'd already seen good reviews on them online, so I'd thought I'd give them a try.

I installed them on the bass and man, first thing I noticed was how close they are to D'Addario Chromes. They are very similar but I find the Fender strings a tad more mellow, less bright than the Chromes.
The strings are what one would expect from modern flatwounds. They have the initial zing and bite but I'm certain they mellow out progressively, after getting some play time. The bass is very controlled, highs are chimey without being harsh and has quite the mid bump, compared to other strings, which help them greatly to cut through even a rough mix with two guitars wailing away.

The tension on these strings is quite spot on, as well. They can be a tad heavy for standard tuning but they work really good for D standard as well. They're obviously not overly tense in D but they do the job very well.

So far, I have not found any cons for these strings. It's the cheapest flatwound set you can find, and yet there are no drawbacks. They're certainly not for those who seek that muted Jamerson tone (albeit they can come close after mellowing out) but it's the best value for money if you're looking for a tad more modern sounding set of flatwound strings.

I'd recommend anyone to give them a try, they're certainly very good value for money and can compete with the more expensive strings.

Great but didnt suit me
Alex8785 20.10.2015
absolutely great strings, loved the feel and the sound of them but for me they did not suit my playing style, I do not recommend them for metal as they don not work for fast playing due to the smooth glass like feeling but they are great for slower genres, they give a great "piano" like sound and are great on the fingers. They do give great tones even when distorted so if you are able to adapt to them then they are very versatile. one problem i did have is they did tend to go out of tune quiet abit compared to regular full wound. all in all loved the strings and wished i could adapt to them easier but sadly going to have to stick to full wound

Nice strings

My first go with Fender strings. I bought this set because I wanted to try flatwounds on my P-bass, and what better than to go with the original? Although I don't have any other flatwound brands to compare with, these strings sounds amazing. Yes, it feels very weird the first time (especially if you're used to playing on Rotosounds ;)), but you get used to it quickly. Very nice smooth tone, with some bark still in there. They even sound good when slapped. Recommend!

Excellent strings for my Precision bass. Good thump but not dead like some more traditional flats. Usual excellent service from Thomann. Will be back for more at this price!

Flatwound convert

Having never used flats on my Fender Jazz USA Bass, I was unsure of which brand to go for. I have always used the roundwound strings from Fender as they are excellent quality, but had read a lot about vintage sounds and different brands for flats.

I use Pyramid Golds on my Hofner, but wanted a more rocky growly sound from the Fender. Recommend these strings for a Fender Bass.

They feel great to play, and have lovely bottom end. Very happy.

Delivery as usual was good, tracking is awesome and service from Thomann was up to the usual standard. Recommended.

T
smooth sound, high quality

I changed over to flat wound strings several years ago, for playing R&B, blues and jazz. I have tried several makes of string and these are the best. They work equally well on my Sandberg and Fender P basses and keep sounding good for a long time - well over a year with daily practice and 30+ gigs. Good investment.

Nice alternate sound

An easy way to change the sound of your bass - try using these flat-wound strings instead of your regular strings. They are not as bright as conventional round-wound strings and don't have the same sustain characteristics. Very useful for me as I was playing a lot of muted bass parts and these strings can give you a sound closer to that of older recordings, basically a retro sound.
