P
A superior Les Paul!
Praeg 08.04.2018
I bought this guitar mainly for recording purposes and for using it in music videos. First of all it's a beautiful instrument but you don't pay almost 4 grand for a piece of furniture. It excels in the sounds you get out of this masterpiece!

I know that many are sceptic about the richlite fretboards and people argue that this is not acceptable on Gibsons when you get ebony fretboards on Epiphone guitars for roughly 900¤.

At first I was also sceptic about richlite and thought it sounded a bit more harsh than the ebony fretboard but now after 3 months of playing it has begun to soften up a bit and get a more "ebony-esque" character. Compared to a 57 Black Beauty this Les Paul Custom has a more sharper sound thanks to the maple cap but in other aspects it's quite similar to the 57.

The only things I were not too happy with was some small scratches on the top of the guitar and a small ding in the binding on the headstock. But I am more concerned with the sound than the esthetics so I chose to keep the guitar because it delivers very clear chords and nice tight low end. The pickups are a bit "microphonic" as old Gibson pickups were back in the days and they are a bit too hot for high-gain sounds where they sometimes tend to pick up unwanted sounds. Having that said they work perfectly for rock, blues and jazz. If you plan on playing metal with this one I'd recommend changing the pickups.

This is an instrument meant for professional use and it's a guitar you buy once in your lifetime. If you are looking for a superior Les Paul this is it. I own one Gibson Les Paul Traditional from 2009 and it is also a great instrument but there are remarkable differencies in how much more precise a Les Paul Custom is compared to standard USA Les Pauls. If a normal Les Paul is a knife then the Custom is a scalpel.

It is worth the extra cash you put on from a normal Les Paul model in how it plays and how it sounds but the price is a bit steep for a hobby musician.

Amazing sound and playability, but disappointing finish.
Anonymous 10.01.2015
The finishing job on this guitar is far from satisfactory. There are issues with it all over the place. Just to name a few: on the neck binding, all around where neck meets body, and black is missing altogether where the neck pickup and fretboard meet (which up close is quite ugly). At this price level, I would expect much better from Gibson. I used to own a 2001 Les Paul Studio which had no such issues at all, so for a Custom to have them caught me completely by surprise.

Having said all that, I simply couldn't bring myself to return it. The setup was damn perfect straight out of the case, and the guitar feels silky smooth and gorgeous to play. And the more I play it, the more the sound and sustain on this thing just blow my mind. In short, too good to return, and I didn't care to risk sacrificing the amazing sound and playability for a nicer finish. After all, you're supposed to play the thing, not look at it.

As always, customer support at Thomann was excellent, as was the pricing in comparison to other stores.

Intoxicating legend

Nothing is perfect and neither was this guitar when I received it. My example was made early 2024 and it had what appeared to be dried glue left all over the binding, I assume this is squeeze out from the multiple layers of binding when glueing which had not been fully removed. This took away from the visual appeal of the otherwise striking binding and I'm a bit flabbergasted that this made its way through QC.. This is purely aesthetic but I chose to carefully scrape this off with a razor..!

I've owned many Les Pauls, both 50´s and 60´s style necks with a strong preference towards the latter. The LPC has its own C shape neck carve that I would describe as hybrid that starts with a 60´s and ends with a 50´s, for reference my example is 0.83" at 1st fret and 0.97" at 12th fret. This is the best playing neck I've ever played!

Sound is subjective and is usually compared/judged to dictate worth and in my experience I sound roughly the same regardless of what I'm playing so it boils down to feel...

After owning this guitar for 6+ months it has made me play more and its so intoxicating that I've bought another one for a different tuning!

I urge you to at least try one, it may be, or may not be the very best guitar you'll ever play

Ultra Top !
The Custom Lover 22.03.2019
I already have a Les Paul Custom Goldtop RI 56 (P90) and now i ordered the black one (Humbuckers). This guitar is completely different, it has not the mellow tone of the Goldtop but for clean playing it is Top, when the volume is pushed it is really THE rock guitar, i love to play this guitar. Tx to Alena Meyer all my questions were answered and the guitar was delivered as promised. Tx Thomann.

The mother of all guitars
Ola Nordmann 21.03.2019
I have always wanted a Les Paul, and when I learned that Gibson were bringing ebony fingerboards back on its Customs, my wallet became empty pretty quick. Thomann delivered as expected, fast and easy.

The sound of this guitar is absolutely brutal. It sustains for days and has that thick, chunky sound you associate with a Les Paul.

Other reviews have pointed out Gibsons lack of quality control which made me sceptical before buying (especially when buying online). However, the guitar I received was flawless. The finish, binding, everything was top notch. I really believe Gibson has up their game lately.

There is a drawback. Compared to my other guitars, the Les Paul is definitely the one that is the hardest to keep in tune due to the way the D and G string angles over the nut. However, that's the case for all Gibsons with this type of headstock and you can't really blame this particular guitar.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the purchase. A dream come true really.

Amazing Guitar!
Anonymous 04.02.2015
This is without doubt, the best guitar I have ever bought (or rather my wife bought for me)!

The Les Paul Custom is such an iconic guitar and from the moment I opened up the case, I felt like I had purchased a piece of musical history!

Sound wise, the pick ups deliver a rich, warm sound, typical of Les Pauls and it sound great in a variety of different amps. This guitar is, however, very heavy, so be warned. I would advise buying a decent strap and strap locks for confort and safety!

The neck is nice and chunky as a Les Paul should be, I would say it feels like somewhere between a 50s and 60s style neck.

You will struggle to find a better guitar than this!
