Metal looks and active EMG power

Harley Benton EX-84 Modern EMG BK Electric Guitar in black

Harley Benton instruments have long enjoyed a reputation for delivering outstanding quality at an affordable price, and the brand also offers numerous guitars for Metal players. The EX-84 Modern EMG - shown here in its black finish - is part of Harley Benton's Pro Series and gives musicians on a budget a chance to get their hands on a high-quality instrument that doesn't compromise. This guitar features a mahogany body and a slim-taper mahogany set neck complete with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard that is ideal for those lightning-fast solo runs, together with a pair of original EMG humbucking pickups. This combination makes for an extremely powerful sound, while the robust hardware ensures reliable tuning stability.

Power and precision in every register

As mentioned above, the use of mahogany for both the neck and body of the EX-84 Modern EMG gives the guitar a punchy and powerful sound with plenty of sustain, and its no-nonsense circuitry - two EMG humbuckers governed by a single control each for volume and tone together with a three-way toggle switch - eliminates unnecessary hassle. The body's deep cutaway and ergonomic neck joint provide unrestricted access to the upper registers when soloing, which is made even easier by the extra jumbo frets, and the solid Tune-o-Matic bridge gives the player's picking hand a comfortable support for effortless riffing.

Ideal for beginners

Fans of heavier musical styles will find in the Harley Benton EX-84 Modern EMG everything that players expect from a Metal guitar: A body that sits comfortably against the player's body and a comfortable neck profile, combined here with a pair of high-output EMG pickups that will push pretty much any amplifier into saturation and deliver a powerful and nuance-rich sound. Despite its wealth of practical features, however, the EX-84 Modern EMG is available at the kind of budget-friendly price for which Harley Benton is known, which makes this classy black guitar a very interesting proposition for those who are new to the instrument.

The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

Metal down to its core

It goes without saying that the EX-84 Modern EMG is built to unleash full-on Rock riffage when paired with a powerful amplifier and the right speakers, but players looking for clean and crunch sounds will not go short here either, thanks to the guitar's combination of an EMG 81 bridge pickup and an EMG 60 neck pickup, which offer a sonic palette that is impressive even for guitars at higher price points. And also worthy of mention are the guitar's classic EX body shape and high-gloss black finish, which ensure that it will always be an eyecatcher on stage and leave no doubt as to its Metal pedigree.

Bargain Explorer to rival Epiphone and Gibson!
Bethymae 18.07.2020
Just bought this for my husband as a 30th birthday present. He's been looking for an explorer for ages, and finally he has one! He had this to say:

The fit and finish of the guitar is exceptional. Fret ends rounded off, frets polished, intonation out of the box is spot on and arrived in perfect condition. Finish is perfect, no imperfections, no fret buzz. All it needed was the action lowering, restringing, lemon oil on the fretboard, and a slight truss rod adjustment. But thats personal preference. Out of the box all it needs is a quick tune and it's very playable!

In short:

Pros - everything. Insane guitar and spec for the money, quality rivals that of Epiphone and even Gibson.

Cons - NONE. Except for the fact they are so good everyone wants one!

Unlucky purchase
HMMR 28.09.2022
After my initial impressions and review, all seemed in order with the guitar except for the Switch that was way too lose, and some minor transportation damages on body made by the lose Allen key that was never secured inside parcel. Once I spent more time with the guitar, a more serious challenge came up.

To start with, the switch could not be tightened at all but that was easily “fixable” by purchasing the EMG switch which would be another € 39-€45 expense. At this time I even considered the extra cost of adding the new switch and change it.

What really triggered the first return was the inverted order of pickups I got my EX with. This issue and loose Allen Key in box, I am aware I am not the only case…very odd I would say

Mat EMG goes on neck and Shinny EMG goes on Bridge!!! Mine were wrongly mounted so that was an added challenge since what I received was not what I ordered.

After returning this guitar…a replacement came.
To my surprise this new guitar came with correctly mounted pickups, but connections did not seem to be in order besides having a dent on the tip of the headstock made during transport.
The signal only came out occasionally, depending on the electronics’ or switch’s mood so I quite sadly had to return the guitar for a second time. This time the switch was mechanically working but think a soldering was loose or something wrong in the circuitry.
By the way, I wonder how the replacement was checked before shipping since it arrived without a 9V so I guess they checked electronics with a Ouija board or a Magic Ball. How can an electronics check be done without a battery for an active pick up guitar? My electronics check seemed to have never happen, must have been but a visual check.
In general the guitar was nice and light, nice to play, if it works that is.

Decided to just get it over with, and returned the guitar. Now I have an even nicer one, ok more expensive but way better and perfectly delivered and working via another shop that actually did a good job and did fully check the guitar before shipping, or I was just lucky…finally!

Was tempted to leave my original review but unfortunately that would not help anyone.
Customer care department was quite helpful but I will keep away from buying any more guitars here since this is the second guitar I purchase that had to go back to Thomann.
Good customer care but horrible quality check whether in factory or headquarters. This time I am very disappointed so if I buy something else it will just be consumables, never again a guitar I am afraid.

Killer at any price!

Well my skepticism has been laid to rest: this guitar is as good as the Gibson VOS LP custom and Fender US strat that it now lives next to on my wall. No Sh#t.
I don’t leave reviews, generally, but I’m here to tell ya,that this guitar is really good. Fit, finish m, playability (almost, lowered the tail piece 1/2 turn and tightens truss half a turn) out the box, hardware is nice, tight and trim. I have not a problem with it, in fact I am really enjoying playing it. A lot.
Needed an EMG loaded axe for a heavy project. Figured I’d try this one first.
Packaging was fine, shipping to US was a week, including handling.

I buy and sell lots of guitars.
This one is not only on par with high end guitars. It’s a keeper.
Get one. Hurry up, before they sell out.

Teenage dream

Looks sick, sounds like a brick to your face (at least with my Fender mustang amp and some downloadable Metallica presets). The neck is fat and I love it, but could be a problem if you are used to thinner guitars. Neck came straight - didn't have to adjust the rod. Experimented with the string height because by default they were pretty high - but that is an individual preference. All the adjusting mechanisms work just fine.

If you take a closer look, you can spot that the colouring is uneven - there are some brighter parts on the neck, but you really have to look for those. And for the price of the guitar - it doesn't bother me at all. The colouring of the guitar is very fragile - if you won`t handle it with care, you can easily damage it. I got a tiny crack on the edge of the body after bumping it on the wooden chair. Also the default strings seemed lubed, because after short period of playing, fretting and picking hand started to turn black.

All in all - I`am very satisfied with the looks and the sound. Would recommend to my friends.
