A classic bass on a budget

Harley Benton JB-62SB 4-string electric bass guitar, front view

Harley Benton has become a household name for producing instruments with an excellent price-performance ratio, and the JB-62SB bass guitar is definitely no exception here, since it gives players a highly versatile bass at a comparatively low price. As the number 62 in its name indicates, this vintage bass comes with a bunch of features that replicate the legendary style created back in the early '60s. Its perfect combination of classic features with an iconic design and finish make the Harley Benton JB-62SB particularly interesting for bassists who are looking for the sound and look of the illustrious original at an affordable price. Its familiar playing feel, passive pickup layout with two JB-style single coils, and incredible tonal flexibility are just some of the highlights offered by the Harley Benton JB-62SB.

Classic features

A basswood body, a roasted ("caramelised") maple neck, and a laurel fingerboard make up the basis of the Harley Benton JB-62SB, and its classic bolt-on neck design promises a noticeably more immediate attack, while its slim D neck profile featuring 20 frets and a 38mm nut width ensures the instantly comfortable playing feel that players know and love. Two matched Roswell single coils and passive electronics comprising a dedicated volume control for each pickup and a master tone control are at the heart of the JB-62SB’s well-defined tone. And since Harley Benton always aims to produce instruments with an appealing design, its JB-62SB bass boasts a Sunburst finish, vintage-style machine heads, a tortoiseshell-look pickguard, and much more for an authentic look that will win over bassists of all genres and styles.

What is more, its two pickups that can be individually controlled and blended make this J-style bass a great all-rounder that feels at home in numerous musical genres, allowing those who don’t have multiple basses for different applications to easily cover a wide range of styles and sounds with a single instrument. Thanks to its attractive price-performance ratio, the Harley Benton JB-62SB is a classic bass that will also make an excellent addition to any musician's existing arsenal.

Perfect combinations

With its two pickups that allow players to create a wide variety of sounds, the Harley Benton JB-62SB can’t be pinned down to one musical genre but rather feels at home everywhere, from Pop, Rock, Funk, and Soul through to R&B and Jazz. The bridge pickup brings out focused mid frequencies and delivers clear, articulate tones for defined fingerstyle lines, while the pickup in the neck position adds the necessary punch and low end for powerful grooves. This perfect combination of pickups allows players of all styles and genres to create a classic bass sound for just about every purpose. And since an electric bass is not designed as a stand-alone instrument, Harley Benton also offers combo amps with different power ratings that perfectly complement the JB-62SB. Those in search of even more bass power for small to medium-sized stages will find the Harley Benton SolidBass 300C the ideal combo to go with their JB-62SB.

A
Excellent bass that can be made fantastic with a bit of work
Anonymous 12.03.2023
Just some context. I've been playing for many years and have owned around 15 various basses in various price ranges. I also do a bit of woodwork and bass adaptations and minor repairs.

As for JB-62. Picked it up because I wanted a jazz (again), and I like the rosewood board and roasted neck. Hoped for a lightweight poplar body.

My initial impressions were very favourable:
- it's beautiful (especially the neck)
- it feels right (again, the neck)
- it sounds like a decent jazz bass
- build quality and finish are truly excellent
- hardware is really good (bridge flawless vintage-style, tuners good, though not 100% smooth)
- setup is decent

Some things weren't ideal:
- fret ends were a bit sharp when sliding
- pickup height can't be so easily adjusted because the pickup screws are at imperfect angles/locations
- the nut was cut a bit high
- it's not that light (4.2kg), but that's just my luck

What I did:
- filed the fret ends a bit (10 minutes)
- filed the nut holes (20 minutes, just being careful)
- oiled the fingerboard
- swapped strings and set their height to my liking

That's around 1 hour of work on it, for a non-professional with some experience and tools. Now the bass it top-notch. Not just "good for the money". Really an excellent instrument. On par with a Fender MiM, in my opinion. Action can go very low. It sounds great and it feels fantastic to play.

At some point I'll drill new pickup holes (Harley Benton please start doing this right!), which actually is a bit tricky...

All in all, an excellent Harley Benton offering, and if you put in a bit of work in it, then it's an instrument to last you a lifetime. I'm keeping mine.

AM
Super affordable with nice additions
Andris Muc 18.09.2023
I've bought this bass attracted by - 1) price; 2) Aesthetics; 3) The extras like the caramelised neck, bridge with brass inserts, and dAddario strings. It came in a bundle still with HB 25 years discount, so it was a true bargain.
Also, I considered a Gotoh short scale, but ended up picking this one as it was half of the price.
It arrived pretty fast (about a week) in Latvia, well-packed. It required minimal setup - the neck was good, and the intonation was spot-on, to my surprise. I had to adjust a bit the strings and pickup heights, but it is possible I've messed up a bit as I went a long time without playing and had to get my fingers used again - not to mention I have small hands.
The good:
1) The caramelised neck - it is gorgeous and comfortable, with a satin finish and a professional feel.
2) The finish - almost perfect, both the body painting, the 3-colours sunburst, the junctions of neck and body.
3) The pickups- pretty vintage and nice tone, got some punch; the neck is better and more silent than the bridge.

The not-so-good:
1) The pickups are quite noisy. Even after shielding everything, the high-frequency noise diminished, but a low hum I hadn't noticed before was there with the bridge pickup. I'll replace them, and they will actually cost more than the whole bundle.
2) The frets were a bit sharp. 10 minutes to fix that.
3) The tuners are not so good. Sometimes, they hold for a good time; others, they lose intonation quickly. In the beginning, they're worse.
The neutral - the d'Addario strings. They sound and fell pretty decent and roundwound-like. Not the best ones in the market, but definitely better than many stock strings. I don't think it is fair the criticism regards the strings some people had - for the bass price, they're a very nice touch.
All things considered, it is a very nice bass. It sounded really good in gigs and live, I've enjoyed playing it, and it inspired me live.
Only keep in mind if you want to record with computers around, the hum is considerable and you'll need to get other pickups, or pick a P-bass.

Gave it a try and am very impressed with everything about it. Even buddies who have American P-Bass and other expensive bass are impressed with it. For the price .... just buy one and see for yourself.
