Good things come in small packages

The Höfner Shorty is a classic travel guitar that was launched back in the 1980s and has been available again since the early 2000s. What makes this instrument special is that it combines an extremely compact body with a full-size guitar scale length. The basswood body is finished in black, and the bolt-on neck, which is made from a single piece of maple for enhanced sustain, features a rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays and a bone nut. The guitar features the typical "Shorty" headstock design and a full-sounding open-coil Höfner humbucking pickup in the bridge position, and the scope of delivery also includes a matching gig bag.

Small guitar, big fun

You can't play full-on guitar solos on a travel guitar, right? Wrong. The Höfner Shorty BK features a full 24-fret register, and its scale length, at 628mm, is the same as that of classic single-cut electric guitars, so lead guitarists can get their mojo working here in complete comfort. The neck is 42mm wide at the nut, meaning that it also has a comfortably slim "vintage medium" profile, and as players have long come to expect from guitars played with a pick, the standard version has a screw-mounted scratchplate that covers and protects the guitar's circuitry.

For frequent travellers

The space-saving (one might even say "pocket-sized") Höfner Shorty BK is the perfect budget-friendly guitar for players who love to travel but don't want to be without a high-quality instrument with a "real" guitar scale length when they are on the road. The Shorty features a fixed, one-piece wraparound bridge/tailpiece unit, which needs to be completely removed when changing the strings, as these are anchored on the underside of the bridge. Players who opt for this guitar should therefore allow themselves plenty of time when re-stringing. Allergy sufferers should also note that the machine heads on the Höfner Shorty are made from nickel.

About Höfner

The Höfner company has a long tradition and was founded by Karl Höfner in Schönbach at the end of the 19th century. Initially, the product range consisted mainly of bowed string instruments, and the first guitars were added around 1930. After the Second World War, the company was relocated to Möhrendorf in Bavaria. In the 1950s, the company flourished thanks to new musical trends, and basses were now introduced in addition to guitars. Legendary models were created during this time, such as the President, the Committee, and the 500/1 short-scale bass, which made music history a short time later with the Beatles. The subsequent boom in Beat music quickly brought Höfner enormous demand and enduring world fame. Today, Höfner is one of the best-known and largest manufacturers of bowed string instruments and of archtop, semi-acoustic, and solid-body guitars, as well as a wide range of basses.

From practice session to party performance

The Höfner Shorty BK measures just 86cm in total, which makes it easy to transport and thus the ideal travel companion for everyone who can't NOT play guitar while on vacation. It will fit diagonally into a standard XL hardshell suitcase, and the included gig bag mentioned above will keep it safe on shorter journeys as well. The Shorty's scale length also makes it ideal for practising scales and exercises while watching TV at home or while colleagues are out of the office. Combined with a small battery-powered amp, it can also provide the perfect musical accompaniment for garden parties, barbecues, and even around the campfire - time to ditch those hiking songs in favour of some good old Rock classics.

Worst guitar I've ever played
JK ismyname 22.03.2018
I'm really sorry to say this, but this was the worst guitar I've ever played.
I'm pretty sure there was not any kind of QC.
Because If this has passed the QC I don't know what to say.
The fretboard was really damaged in two different spots.
The frets were too rough, and you couldn't even make a half step bend!
The tone control made some weird noises while plugged into the amp.
The guitar was literally unplayable.

I'm quite dissapointed both from the QC and by the fact, that I needed a travel guitar so much. Of course I've sent it back to Thomann.
I also want to mention that a HB telecaster I've purchased some time ago for 82euros, was easily ten times better than this which costs almost twice as much.

I will also mention some minor flaws, that i could live with, but I don't know if there should be in this price.
One of the bridge bolts was totally loose, the strings are really light and poor quality and the fretboard is completely dry. It also doesn't hold tuning well too, but I didn't have the opportunity to test this a lot.

And If you think I'm being too picky here, I'll just mention that I've made purchases of over 3000euros and that, is the second time I return something.(the other one was just a faulty 50e looper pedal)

a
cool and portable
asneyd 24.09.2013
great little guitar with very hot pickup surprisingly well sounding. bought this little baby for my little brother for his 18th birthday which he really enjoyed but left in my house one time so I decided to have a go of it. I thought it would be very dull and weak sounding but was pleasantly surprised by the sound which was actually very powerful and hot sounding. I think this guitar would be a great backup for gigging as its very portable and the sound is great. all my guitarist mates think its great and 2 of them bought their own ones. I wouldn't recommend this as someones main guitar as the tone isn't very versatile but would definatly recommend for travel and backup or if your budget is tight.

A
A quite nice travel guitar
Archion 30.08.2017
For the money, it is a pretty decent travel guitar. Although it has one pickup, you can get a variety of sounds using the volume and tone knobs. The pickup has quite high output, so if you want to get the super clean sounds, then it may not be the best choice. The neck and fretwork feel quite good as well.
But the strings on the guitar felt like spaghetti, so I replaced them. When getting new strings you have to be aware of the fact that although the neck is of normal length, the guitar itself is much shorter, so you need to get thicker strings. I myself use 11s. Another thing you have to be aware of, is that due to the shape and size of the instrument, it is quite neck heavy, so you need to get used to it while sitting. Also, when using a strap I recommend you to fasten the strap behind the nut as you do with a regular acoustic guitar.
The minor problems I have are with the tuners sometimes not holding the tuning so well and the pickup screws tending to fall off.
But overall you'll get a pretty decent guitar and many amazed looks for the electric guitar this small size. Pair it with the Blackstar Fly 3 and you can rock out everywhere you want!

not bad

nice little guitar, could have had a better quality finish ,If you look closely you can see where someone in the factory had filled in unwanted frets with wood filler (so don`t look to closely ) but it does the job well and is easier to store than a full sized guitar.. cheap and cheerfull playable guitar
