Great tool
GD77 12.06.2013
This great little box serves a few purposes and, for me, has become a more or less indispensable part of my set-up. Principally, I use it to attenuate the output volume of a Fryette amplifier (100w, running in half-power mode) for playing at home, which also has the effect of allowing me to run the power amplifier at much higher levels than would normally be possible at home. I also have it permanently connected to my recording set-up via a TC Electronic interface.

Using it as an attenuator, I don't notice any colouration of tone and, in fact, using this device has really brought my amp to life. While it's possible to set my amplifier to levels low enough for home use, being able to do that while running the power amp at high levels has obvious tonal benefits.

By disconnecting the speaker connection, the Dummybox will attenuate 100% of the signal, so it's possible to record and practice late at night if you want to, either monitoring the signal from the computer or via the Dummybox's headphone output.

I find the pre-set, toggle-selectable attenuation levels are perfect for my purposes: lowest setting for evening, middle during the day. The highest level is perfect for live or rehearsal purposes.

As a recording device, I find the speaker emulation settings are perfectly good for rehearsing parts or making quick recordings of ideas. They need a lot of processing for the sort of polished sounds you'd want on a final recording, and personally I've never managed to get a sound I like for that purpose.

However, the unfiltered output is great for feeding the signal into software speaker emulation, e.g., impulse responses, which provides better sounds and much more flexibility.

In all, this thing does everything I need well. My only criticisms are the decision to put the connections on the same side as the controls (mine sits on top of my amp, so it means having cables trailing down the front, rather than the back, of my amp), and the need to unplug the speaker for silent operation (rather than using a switch). Minor complaints, really.

Excellent dummybox: good sound at low volume, no surprises
mv bxl 06.05.2018
I hesitated quite a bit when selecting the product. I consider cheaper alternatives, but the comments indicating some serious heating made me prefer the koch one.
So far it seems like an excellent choice and I would definitely recommed it; strong attenuation without significant sound quality loss, pratical bundle of outputs, no heating issues. In fact, after playing a couple of hours, the dummybox is cooler than the amp itself.

Since i use it with a koch studiotone, the extra outputs for recording are not useful as I already have the exact same one directly on the amp.
Regarding the volume, I typically play with the strongest attenuation (i live in a flat and I have a small kid): tuning the amp volume I can easily go from quiet output to enjoyable volume.

I did not try it playing with a band yet. I might eventually need to change the attenuation setting (which is super easy to do anyway), but I already know I will have no problem to deliver a nice powerful sound.

Higly recommend.

Definitely more for bedroom use than performance but small venues will be fine.
Great product all round!

Life saver!

a producer mate of mine suggested i get one of these for recording at home. I was super skeptical at first, but it's an absolute life saver. I have a Fender Deluxe combo and there is no way I would be able to get any of the great tones out of the amp without the dummybox, certainly without my neighbours sending me death threats!

KOCH attenuator

This product is surprisingly good for me, I didn't know it would worth 160 pounds, but I now I can crack up my amp to whatever volume level I want to practice at home without sacrificing the desired tone.

A
Recording and late night jams
Anonymous 15.05.2014
I originally decided on this box for attenuating the signal from my Marshall into my speakers for late night playing without upsetting wife, kids or neighbours.

The best tones I can get are when the amp is pushed and this allows me to do this keeping noise levels in check. The monitor speaker out High level is great for normal playing, Medium does well for when people are about and Low is perfect for playing at low volumes but with the sweet sound of pushed power tubes.

Since I've had it I find I'm actually using all the time now for recording the amp direct into my DAW and adding speaker impulses at a later stage, mixing and matching until I'm happy with the sound I want. It's just missing a headphone out for me and it would be perfect but for the price I can't complain.

Superb at attenuating my Tube amp (60W Ashdown Angel) enabling me to get full tube tone at Studio or Bedroom volume. Line out with speaker and Mic emulation sounded convincing and useable straight into Cubase however I found better results using the unfiltered output and a Cabinet Emulation VST Plugin (Amplitube). Build quality is high and I would expect this to last.

Excellent for home practice with tube amp
Bogdan T. 26.12.2013
I'm driving my Fender Deluxe Reverb tube amp through the dummybox, it sounds pretty close to the speaker sound, it is great! Only downside is that i cannot pluin headphones straight into it, i had to plug one of those micro-amps into the dummy load, then headphones. Still, this is the ONLY way to crank a tube amp at home.
