A good small external sequencer for on-the-fly control
CDStewArt 12.04.2024
This is a compact and efficient sequencer that has become an essential part of my setup, particularly with the Empress Effects Zoia. Unlike the internal sequencers of the Zoia, Beebo, and Mod Dwarf, the SQ-1 allows for more dynamic and spontaneous sequencing while playing my stringed instruments.

Usability: The original knobs on the SQ-1 were a bit small and fiddly for my taste, so I upgraded them with larger, clear knobs that easily slip over the existing ones. This simple modification has significantly improved the usability of the device, making real-time tweaks much easier.

Connectivity: I use a custom Raspberry Pi midi/usb host to bridge the SQ-1 with the Zoia and Keith McMillen SoftStep. This setup ensures smooth connectivity and extends the functionality of the sequencer, allowing for more complex control setups.

Performance: The SQ-1 performs reliably in extended use sessions. It's sturdy, proving to be a dependable part of my musical toolkit.

Overall Satisfaction: I am very satisfied with the SQ-1. It enhances my ability to play and tweak sequences on the fly, offering a level of control that internal sequencers can't match.

I think something like this is a must-have for performers who use devices like the Zoia, though I'd rather this one had better knobs and connectivity. Still, its ability to integrate seamlessly and perform reliably with just a few add-ons makes it an invaluable component of my setup.

Pure fun for little money
Robotique 14.02.2024
This very sturdy, small sequencer with a robust metal chassis is pure fun. It's rather simple, with some hidden features (search the web or YouTube).

As I use it solely as a modulator for my semi-modulars, it does what one could expect. It syncs nicely to Logic via MIDI, but I've also sent out short, snappy sounds out a separate output on my audio interface into the Sync input on the SQ-1. So far that has worked as a charm when being in need to sporadically trigger a new step in the sequencer.

Does the trick
Arcadia 15.06.2020
If you want a very simple step sequencer this is a good choice. Works with my CV-capable analog synths (Behringer D, Arp Odyssey, etc.) and it's easy to sync to MIDI Clock from Logic. Only wish you could have 16 steps for both sequence A and B. If you want more possibilities maybe the BeatStep Pro is better but I like having more limited options that aren't so complicated and this box also takes up virtually zero space on my desktop.

Is a great bit of kit for the money but when sync'd from an external sequencer it appears to take 2 steps to every one. Same goes for syncing it from a square wave LFO. Korg haven't responded to my support request for this issue yet.

Looks good, smells good and feels right ;)

It is fairly cheap. Excellent solution for the beginners... but at the same time, very usefull for advanced synth lovers.

There are so many features that it can take a while to explore all of them.
I personally use it to connect my DAW with some new and popular analog synths that I own.
I will actually buy one more Korg SQ-1 to get even more flexibility!
For any synth with CV connectivity. In fact it serves as a kind of ''PC to midi/CV'' converter. ;)
Sync in/out is very usefull and clever feature. For Volca Series and far beyond. From DAW to Eurorack.
It will give you a lots of fun and exploration - guarantied!

Good basic sequencer
mybud 05.12.2018
I've been using this as a gate/cv controller with various basic oscillators to experiment with generating minimalistic loops à la Reich, Terry Riley, and so on. For such a small unit, it has some well thought out choices, such as variable duty cycles for generating brief percussive attacks at the lowest settings which can then be lengthened for more melodic possibilities. A small gripe is regarding the battery life, which is a bit too brief for my taste. This is only a potential problem in a live setup without a computer, since the USB option eliminates this problem entirely. The control knobs feel a trifle flimsy, but with due care in handling this shouldn't present a problem.
