LM
solid cymbals from Meinl
Laurent M. 10.07.2017
The Meinl Mike Johnston cymbal box set contains a variety of Byzance models that he chooses for his standard set up when conducting lessons and performing. Included in this box are a pair of 14" Byzance Extra Dry Medium Hi-Hats, 20" Byzance Extra Thin Hammered Crash, 21" Byzance Mike Johnston Signature Transition Ride, plus a free 18" Byzance Extra Dry Thin Crash. These cymbals deliver a musical blend of dark and dry attack with a short, trashy wash.

The 14" Extra Dry hi hats have a full-bodied and distinctive "chick" sound. The 20" Extra Thin Hammered Crash serves great as both a big crash and a light ride. At the heart of the setup is the Mike Johnston signature Transition ride cymbal. This cymbal is designed to respond with the perfect transition from articulate sticking to wide open crashing and back, while always maintaining musicality. Also highlighted in this set is a free 18" Byzance Extra Dry Thin Crash. This cymbal is great for adding a contrasting crash sound that works well as an accent cymbal, and it allows players to dig in for trashy riding effects.

Their hand-hammered and lathed surfaces with warm sounds and selection of models may be rooted in tradition, but Meinl Byzance cymbals are the ultimate choice when it comes to modern versatility. Every Byzance model is hand hammered into shape by cymbal artisans in Turkey, giving each cymbal its own unique and colorful voice.

Highly recomended!

What i like the most about this set is the fact that every single cymbal in here is unique and diffrent from the other cymbals in the set, i mean the hi-hat is so groovy that it makes you play right away, the 18" extra dry crash it has an unique sound, it is warm and it can be very short , but if you hit it harder , it becomes solid rock. The 20" crash is a beast , i think it has two main sounds , it has some brightness , but when you hit it a little bit harder, the brightness it's combined with a very nice trashy sound , it's one of the best sounds that everyone wants from a crash. The 21" ride is a monster, it has a very smooth articulation, you can hear it very clearly and it also releases some undertones to the cymbal ,it washes a bit, the sound is really unique, the bell is nice and warm and sounds alot like the ride.
This set is very versatile , i can play jazz, fusion, but i also can play rock and works perfectly. A friend of mine borrowed this set from me to record an hard rock/metal album and he loved the cymbals so much and the chemistry between them that he told me he will buy the same set.
The set has a very good price, i personally saved alot of money by buying it, worth every cent.

Perfect balance of cymbals. Great controlled tones, matched perfectly and work equally well live and in the studio.
