Tonal flexibility in pedal format

The MXR M108S is a graphic equaliser designed as an effect pedal that encompasses 10 frequency bands ranging from 31Hz to 16kHz and caters to all instruments. For optimum adjustment, input and output volume are independently adjustable within a signal chain, while the included power supply provides the pedal with 18V. Compared to its predecessor, the MXR M108, the new MXR M108S has been expanded to include true bypass switching, efficient noise reduction, two parallel outputs for signal splitting, and brighter LEDs for the faders. Each fader allows the respective frequency to be adjusted by ±12dB, making the MXR M108S a powerful sound-shaping hub and one of the most flexible EQs in a space-saving pedal format.

Visual and tonal precision

As is common among graphic equalisers, the individual frequency bands on the MXR M108S are adjusted using sliders, the advantage of which is that the position of each fader is easily readable. In contrast to the EQ controls on the majority of instrument amplifiers, which are hard to read on dark stages, these illuminated faders will prove very helpful for making quick tonal adjustments. As mentioned above, each frequency band can be adjusted by up to ±12dB, while the MXR M108S’s true bypass switching allows the signal to flow without interference when the pedal is turned off, allowing the player to make optimum A/B comparisons between the “on” and “off” states of the signal and ensuring lossless transmission within the signal chain. And as one would expect from a pedal, the equaliser is turned on and off using the inbuilt footswitch.

EQ on the go

Since the MXR M108S covers most of the normal range of human hearing, it is suitable for almost any electrically amplified instrument, and its compact dimensions and lightweight design make it ideal for use in a live performance environment, where guitarists and bassists in particular will appreciate its versatility. The MXR M108S can also double as a signal splitter thanks to its two parallel outputs, making it a convenient solution for feeding two separate amps or preamps.

About MXR

American effect pedal specialist MXR was established in Rochester, New York in 1972 and was acquired by Dunlop Manufacturing in 1987, since when it has been headquartered in Benicia, California. Classic effects from MXR include the Phase 90 and the Dyna Comp, and the company also offers reissues of legendary pedals from its past under the MXR Custom Shop label as well as offering bassists their own dedicated line of effects with the MXR Bass Innovations series. MXR endorsers down the years have included legends like Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, and Mike Rutherford.

An indispensable sonic tool

The MXR M108S serves as a precision tool for players to modify their sound at the touch of a button. For the guitar, this could be handy when switching from rhythm to solo sound – and for bass, it might be perfect for shifting between fingerstyle and slap sounds. The equaliser is also practical for switching between two distinctly different instruments and attuning their respective sound to suit the player’s needs. Furthermore, the MXR M108S can be employed as a permanent sound correction tool in the signal chain, whether for eliminating boomy frequencies on stage or when the internal EQ on the amp is not quite accurate enough, and its effective noise reduction also minimises any unwanted background noise.

Great EQ PEdal
Pablo aus B. 24.09.2020
EDIT 7/OCT/ 2020: I just got the pedal back from Thomann and to my surprise MXR did indeed repair it without added cost, so I have to take my words back and say that I am indeed very satisfied!

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I would advice everybody against buying this product. At the beginning, as long as it worked as it should, the pedal was actually great. I bought it exactly 2 years ago, but for the last year I haven't used it at all as I have other EQs/Preamps. To my surprise, when I wanted to use it again I discovered that one of the bands (the 8k) was producing crackles and noise depending on its position. Also 4 of the LEDs were not working properly. As I still had Guarantee (one year left), I sent the pedal back to Thomann and they sent it back to MXR. The response from MXR: the problem is caused by wear and therefore no covered by the Guarantee. They want 100€ in order to repair it! (60% of the price!). Obviously the quality of the components used by MXR there is not high enough in order to hold not even a year of light use (in studio, I didn't even tour with it!).

After doing some research, I discovered a lot of forums posts where multiple users were reporting identical or very similar problems with this very same pedal.

I'm very disappointed with the service offered by MXR.

You Get What You Pay For
Daniel Dochev 09.12.2018
This is the one pedal that's in my signal chain no matter what.

I use this EQ for a mid boost and high pass filter on my guitar to cut through the other instruments and be clearly audible, and it serves its purpose well beyond my expectations.

To elaborate, not too many pedals have a full TEN band EQ and the fact that this one does makes a world of difference, you can adjust and tweak the EQ to perfection, no quality loss in the signal, no unwanted noise.

I also recently started using 2 amplifiers and the 2 outputs on this pedal gave me not only the perfect opportunity to split the signal without having to buy additional gear but also apply the EQ to both signals.

The gain and volume sliders interest me none and I always have them set to standard, but if you're looking for a volume or gain boost feature, it's got you covered.

Pros:
- 2 Outputs, as mentioned before, perfect for signal splitting into different amps.
- Easy to use
- Sleek, elegant, and sturdy design

Cons:
- Annoying lights, every single slider is lit in this annoyingly bright blue while the pedal is engaged, one light would have been enough.
- A bit pricey, but as a top of the shelf industry-standard EQ, and with the nice bonus of a signal splitter AND volume/gain boost on top of that, it's definitely worth it.

Killer sound and blinding lights
Alfuros 30.08.2022
I love this thing. It's fantastic. It gives you a ton of control over the sound and doubles as a volume/gain boost. It's sturdily built and the switch is solid and the sliders have a good feel to them.

My only gripes are:
1. It runs on 18v power (adapter included, but would have liked 12 or 9v as its more common in power supplies)
2. The LEDs are ABSOLUTELY BLINDING. I cannot emphasize this enough. This thing will light up in blue a dark room. If you are playing in a dark environment and look down at this thing it will blind you. I can't see my pedalboard when looking at it. Even when turned off, the volume and gain ones are STILL ON. It is infuriating.

Note: There's a hack of taking out the LEDs and putting them in backwards (don't do this while the device is powered) to make them not light up anymore, but then you can't tell when it's on anymore. I'll probably put black marker on them at some point.

To summarize, love the sound and quality, but dislike the 18v and HATE the LEDs. Still not taking it off my pedalboard, though.

ONLY 18 V SUPLY - IS MAIN CONS! QUALITY - MAIN PROS!
ZiozikMojoZ 14.03.2022
It wrks great, but doesnt maintain power suply with 9 V, be aware! For studio use its ok, but for far placeds where you haven`t AC/DC (220/110) it will be big trouble, cause MXR EQ works only with its own adaptor, doesn`t works with Crona battery 9V (6LF22).

Anyway its MXR - looks cute, optimal size, sounds great, use it like "audio-microscope" for my recordings, and it works great. Like this brand but don`t think that is better than BOSS EQ7.
