Remo 24" Powerstroke 3 Coated Dot

Having used EMADs for years, I decided I was after a change. As I was going for Controlled Sounds on my toms and have used Coated CS Dots on my snares for as long as I can remember, I decided to plump for the relatively new Powerstroke 3 with Dot.

This is a great head for those looking for the feel of a single-ply kick head, but with a bit more control than a run of the mill coated Ambassador or equivalent. The dot and powerstroke strip around the edge of the head act as dampers so you can get a lovely controlled tone whilst still appearing 'open'. I pair this with a felt strip across the resonant head for that extra bit of 'thump'.

As with all coated heads, the coating adds some warmth to the tone and takes away some beater attack- so if you're after a more in-your-face, modern sound i'd either go for something like the Evans EMAD clear, or the clear version of this head (which also includes a Remo kick patch). It's also worth mentioning that this head has it's dot mounted on the rear, whereas the clear counterpart has a forward attached dot. Although i've had problems with the coating on other Remo heads in the past, this one is holding up well after three months of regular play, without any reinforcement patches.

Overall, i've been very pleased with this head- it's especially great for rock, pop and ska music!

Ich hatte dieses Fell bereits in clear, und war damit zufrieden. Durch den Dot ergibt sich ein etwas härterer Anschlagston, im Endeffekt eben das Gegenstück zu den Controlled Sound-Fellen, nur für die Basstrommel. Trotzdem war der Klang immer noch rund, voluminös und resonant.

Mit dem Powerstroke 3 Coated Dot wurde ich jedoch nicht wirklich glücklich. Bereits beim Aufziehen des Fells bemerkte ich, dass es anscheinend nicht ganz gleichmäßig gearbeitet ist. Beim Stimmen waren auf einer bestimmten Seite deutlich mehr Umdrehungen nötig, um das Fell gleichmäßig zu spannen. Dieses Problem hatte ich mit der Clear-Version nicht (das kann natürlich auch nur ein Ausreißer in der Produktion gewesen sein).

Beim Anspielen klang es trockener und hatte weniger Resonanz als das Clear. Das ist bei Coated-Fellen in der Regel der Fall und an sich nichts Negatives. Jedoch veränderte sich hier der Klang für mich dadurch zum Schlechteren. Der Attacksound war deutlich hervorgehoben, für mich zu hart. Zudem fehlte dem Fell Resonanz und Ton. Vielleicht ist der aufgeklebte Dot, in Verbindung mit dem Coating dann doch zu viel.

Ich muss fairerweise dazuschreiben, dass ich mich anschließend nicht mehr weiter mit verschiedenen Stimmungen beschäftigt habe, eventuell wäre ein besseres Ergebnis erzielbar gewesen. Jedoch empfand ich das Fell im direkten Vergleich mit annähernd gleicher Stimmung wie zuvor bei der Clear-Version so, wie oben beschrieben.

Ich denke, das Powerstroke 3 Coated Dot passt für Leute, die einen wirklich kontrollierten, eher trockenen Ton mit deutlich hervorgehobenem Attack suchen. Für mich persönlich ist die Clear-Version die bessere Wahl (mehr Ton, mehr Resonanz, weniger harter Attack).
