A classic among rim mics

The compact, sturdy, and cleverly designed e 604 microphone from Sennheiser is a dynamic cardioid instrument mic that is primarily intended for percussion instruments and has proven itself in numerous applications. Its impact-resistant fibreglass-reinforced housing provides optimum protection against accidental hits, so despite weighing in at just 60 grams (a full 80 grams lighter than its bigger brother, the e 906), this model doesn't cut any corners in terms of durability. Excellent flexibility and ease of positioning are also ensured by the microphone's highly compact design as well as the integrated microphone stand mount and the MZH 604 drum clip included in the scope of delivery. This bundle includes a full three e 604 mics, enough to mike the toms of a standard drum set, for example.

Minimum size, maximum effect

The diminutive design envelope of the Sennheiser e 604 somewhat belies its impressive capabilities: Small though it may be, this mic will deliver a punchy, open-sounding reproduction of sources with an SPL of up to 160dB without distortion. According to the manufacturer's data sheet, the e 604 provides a slight boost between 1.5kHz and 7kHz, which also lends a pleasing characteristic to the sound. With a frequency response that ranges from 40Hz to 18kHz, the Sennheiser e 604 is highly versatile in application and will cut an equally fine figure when used with brass and woodwind instruments as well.

Wonderfully practical

The list of potential users for the Sennheiser e 604 is extensive yet easily summed up, since anyone looking for a compact and robust solution for recording wind or percussion instruments and fully capturing their sonic characteristics will find what they are looking for here and can be sure that it will perform reliably in every situation, from the safe confines of the studio to the rigorous live performance environment. What is more, the e 604's price-performance ratio makes it an interesting proposition for professional as well as semi-professional users.

About Sennheiser

In June 1945, Prof. Fritz Sennheiser founded the Wennebostel Laboratory, which initially produced measuring equipment. Commissioned by Siemens in 1945, the young company developed the MD-1 microphone, which was launched in 1946. After the development of further microphones, the company was renamed Sennheiser Electronic in 1958. Two years later, Sennheiser introduced the MD 421 dynamic microphone, which is still in production today and still held in high esteem by many sound engineers. Further groundbreaking developments, such as the HD 414 headphones and the MD 441 microphone classic, hugely enhanced the company’s international reputation, eventually making Sennheiser one of the leading manufacturers of microphone and headphone systems in the world.

For snares, toms, and more

Probably the most "classic" way to position the Sennheiser e 604 is to attach it directly to the rim of the respective drum using the included rim clip - a method that is both quick and easy as well as secure. Should the instrument in question not have a rim, it is of course also possible to attach the mic to a stand, which thanks to the integrated stand mount can be done without requiring any additional hardware, allowing Djembés and similar rimless drums to be miked easily and effectively. And since numerous recording applications require several of these microphones to be deployed at once, it goes without saying that this bundle will be the ideal solution for a great many users.

Unlucky purchase

Unfortunately, I bought the 3pack bundle and, after a couple of gigs, 2 of them had the same issue.
When inserting the XLR connector (carefully, by me) the grill detached from the housing, and so did the cartridge.

Important to mention:
*The mics were always carried on a Flyth Pro case with custom foam inserts;
*Always mounted and connected properly, and only by myself;
*The grills are intact. They were not smashed by the sticks or anything else;
*I have used other e604s in the past and never had any problem with them.

The glue cord used to seal the mic is so thin it cannot hold the parts in place properly.
I believe it is a defected serie. Already submitted them to the RMA warranty process.
Anyway, never expected this from Sennheiser.

The sound quality of this mics is known for years. I am pleased by the sound specs but overall they are useless with damaged housing.

Nice !

E604 are a must-have on stage, nobody will talk discuss about them. You can use them with almost all bands, they are not to expensive, they sound's good and they are durable. Only the handles could be done better - from a little bit tougher ABS and with a small grip on front so applying them on drum would be easier even with one hand. Of course on other instruments they still sound great, but I use them mainly on drums. Great deal.

The best tom mics for live!
willdefear 07.11.2018
Nobody should be without e604's when micing drums live. They are the most natural, snappy tom mics I have come across that sound universally great in every venue, in every PA system.

The clips and small format are perfect for space saving, mic placement, and generally do not get in the way of the drums, unlike some other brands.

The only issue I have come accross is the grills can be easily knocked off by a strike from a drum stick, and are difficult to repair properly after. Otherwise indistructable, and in 10 years I have only seen one of them break from an idiot drummer standing on one!

Highly reccomended, don't bother with anything else for live!

Great live, good for recording
NorwegianDrummer 03.09.2017
I have used E604s on countless gigs for years, but never actually owned any.
They are super easy to clip on and are fairly small and will not get in the way of things in a live situation. I have used them a lot for recordings with great result. comparing cost and sound quality it is hard to beat. Will keep using these for many more years to come.

Sound-wise they are nice and clear on the toms, with plenty "meat" on the lower frequencies ,in my case 14" and 16" floor toms. (For the one on my 10" tom I boost it a bit on the highs, and my 12" and 13" toms I keep the high boost and add a little on the mids, and the 14" +16" get the low end boost as well a bit of compression.

They are also very useful as a snare-side mic, and as vocal mic for drummers (very small mic and can be put on a mic stand behind you)

Pros: sound quality, durability and cost.

Cons: would be great if you could use angled xlrs, but for that to work the mic would have to be set at the very top of the clip, whereas the best result(in my opinion) is achieved when having the mic closer to the drumhead.
