Bright and Middy.. But thats not a bad thing.
Roll back tone pot and cut mids for killer tone.
Cleans up insanely well.
Single coil split sounds great with almost unnoticeable volume drop.
Great harmonics.
Enough output to do Metal.
Would suit 250k pots.
Would suit basswood or darker tone guitar.
I loved the tone of this pickup when i checked it out online, but when I put it in the bride on a old PRS SE Santana with a mahogany body, initially something wasn't sounding right... but after a bit of tweaking she sounds so sexy :)
[ Edit I talked to a local luthier, he suggested changing the magnet to a Alnico 8, It now sounds more balanced, less ice pick top end, tighter and more solid bottom end, a bit more gain and output, cleanup is a little slower to kick in on volume roll back, definitely worth trying this mod for the cost of a $6 magnet ]
So... these are bright and middy... but thats not a bad thing....
The Highs - I normally run my 500k tone pots at 8-10 but with this pickup I have to roll it back to 3-5 with a .022 Cap. These would be great if you have 250k pots.
The Mids... very middy. Years ago I picked up a trick to get a killer dirty tone by running a EQ pedal as a boost with one of the mid sliders all the way up to boost the mids before the drive, then cut those extra mids post drive on the amps EQ. This is kinda what this pup is doing out of the box, once I cut the mids some more on the amp and added a bit more bass she screams on my dirty channel.
Also this pickup cleans up very quickly. On my full on high gain channel with the volume at pot at 10 Im getting killer metal tones, roll the volume back to 9 and it cleans up to rock, 7-8 and I'm already in my dirty blues tone, 6 and under and its sounding very cleanish with no loss of detail or worries that my noise gate is going to cut in.
Harmonics and note/string definition is excellent. Great detection of touch, feel and other nuances. Single coil split gives a nice stratty tone.
