Good to have it in your bag.

I'm playing stoner, sludge, death and doom metal mostly on deep old school drums and sometimes need some extra control of sound. Mostly in studio but also when I'm using not mine drum sets live.

High range of use depends where and how many you will put it on the heads. I'm using them mostly on my 14x8" snare, 2 pieces both sides at the edge to control sustain and overtones. On toms and floor toms only one works fine. Best choice if you will play other drums on gigs and don't have enough time to tune them for your applications - sometimes it's only hope to reach Dark side of the Force. You can even use it with cymbals for drier sound. It's better than adhesive tape and don't left glue traces.

Their biggest flaw is poor resistance for temperatures when you playing outside and left it on the sun. It will melt and you will not be able to use them in correct way.

The greatest advantage it that you don't need it all the time but it's good to have it in your bag.

Certainly makes a difference
Anonymous 02.04.2016
Bought these to help reduce the 'ring' after tones on my drums and the difference is surprisingly good. I didn't really expect the small blue jelly things to have any difference but I was proved very wrong. They don't cancel out all the 'ring' though which is why my rating is not full marks.
Durability is average as after a couple of weeks sessions on my drums they had started to lose their stickiness a little, not so that they would move around the drum but the edges would start peeling. they wash easily though and stickiness was returned!
i found they work best if you follow the guidelines of putting them at 90 degrees to each other. Make sure they are clear of where you hit the drum though because my drumsticks have hit them a few times and the jelly has started to tear a little. No impact on performance though.
Overall, a worthy addition to my drums and are recommended but I still prefer my RemO drum rings to reduce the after tones - simply because they are more durable.

Great for the price, awesome in a bind

There are better dampening systems out there that give much more control without sacrificing the tone as much. However, Moongels have their use and I wouldn't go anywhere without some.

They do what they say on the tin, they dampen, and control the overtones, at the expense of some of the tone of the drum itself.

But they last, they can be washed to last longer, and if I loose a couple I won't cry about it. Sometimes, you need to go heavy handed with a few of these to control a bad kit with bad heads.

But if you are looking for something that will allow you to fine tune the sound you want, there are other (better) options

Can't really wash them
Vicarious1 19.05.2018
The function of these moongels is pretty straight forward.

You can use them on your snare, toms, cymbals, you name it.
They stick pretty well and are easy to take on/off.
However, over time, especially the ones you have on your snare and toms will get small wood pieces from your drum sticks.

Running them under water doesn't really clean them off easily.
However, they are cheap enough so you can buy one pack, and decide for yourself whether these are for you or not.

Does exactly what you might expect...

Fairly self explanatory product, especially handy for getting rid of snare reverb. Can even be used on cymbals as well if you want them a little bit more punchy with less sustain.

My go to dampening pads
rudolfsjanis 04.02.2019
Moongel is one of the better drum dampening solutions out there, however, I do think that they're currently being outdone by other companies, which provide cheaper and more stylish approaches. I'd recommend then, but I'd advise you look in to other alternatives first.

Perfect solution, but a bit expensive...
Serhat 15.03.2015
I have always wondered what these are like and i finally purchased a pack just out of curiosity. Needless to say, they are really very handy and practical. They give you the chance to adjust your dampening perfectly and instantly. But they get dirty really easy. They pick all the dust very quick and it's not that easy to clean them. I tried to wash one of them with some dish soap under cold tap water and it got even more jelly. The colour changed to somewhat purple and it became too sticky. When i tried to pick it up it came apart and tore. So if you are a gearhead or an original brand fan type of person, you can go ahead and purchase this. They work fine as long as you keep them clean. Or you can go to a 1$ store and get some window gels instead. They are exactly the same thing ;)

Does the job, but doesn't last long
ViktorM 30.03.2016
Effect vise - does the job. Mute just much as you need. I usually cut one moongel in two pieces and them put them at 6 and 9 o'clock positions.

Sadly it easily looses integrity, it wrinkels and doesn't hold by the drumhead surface. Washing helps, but only shortly. So in few months you get dirty drumhead and remainings of moongel(s) which are not glued to the drumhead so you loose damping effect.

Some sound effect can provide tape and paper napkin, but visually it is worst solution.

A must for every drummer
RichardFK 01.02.2018
I bought these to cut-down on the resonance from a kit in the house - one each on the cymbals, toms and snare and theyhelp to the sound nicely.

I understand they're pretty essential for gigging and recording, but in a household setting they're also very good for helping you get that "sound in your head" as drum recordings have had a bit of compression and gating applied to give a more even sound. Add one of these to each drum and you'll get your own playing sounding a bit more like that too. Prior to buying these, I had some foam strips on the skins and they were hopeless - Moongel is by far the best product I've used.

Only problem is how fragile they are - easily torn and if they land on the carpet, you''ll never get the fluff off.
