With the Startone Star Drum Set Studio ‑BK, even the most price-conscious novice drummers can afford the complete package – everything they need to play their first beats, straight after unpacking and setting up. The kit consists of a five-piece shell set with a 20" bass drum, a 10" and a 12" tom, a 14" floor tom, and a 14" snare drum. On top of all that, it comes with a double-braced hardware set consisting of a straight cymbal stand, a hi-hat stand, a snare stand, a foot pedal, and a drum stool – of course, budding drummers also get a two-piece brass cymbal set comprising a 13" hi-hat and a 15" crash/ride. We have even thrown in the first pair of sticks!

Startone Star Drum Set Studio -BK

Packed with useful features

Despite its unbeatable price, the Startone Star Drum Set Studio ‑BK offers many features that users would expect from much more expensive packages. These include a snare throw-off with adjustable wire tension, tom mounts with memory clamps, knurled legs on the floor tom for secure positioning, bass drum legs with rubber feet for hard floors and twist-out spikes for carpet, a bass drum pedal with single chain and adjustable spring tension for fast, direct power transmission, and a tilt adjustment for the lower hi-hat cymbal. The pedals for the hi-hat and bass drum are made from black anodised metal – so they not only look really cool, but also match the black foiled shells perfectly. Smart logo decals round off this great-looking set.

Beginner's set on a budget

The unbeatable price of the Star Drum Set Studio ‑BK means that Startone is unequivocally appealing to absolute beginners who want to get a feel for drumming without having to invest too much straight away. The set contains all the most important components for learning the fundamentals or simply playing along to one's favourite songs for fun. As the bass drum and floor tom are one size smaller in the "Studio" configuration than in the "Standard" version, the kit can also be installed at a lower height and in a smaller space. This makes it particularly suitable for kids and younger drummers who aren't sure if they're really going to stick with it (pun intended!). All in all, this is a sensationally affordable set for practising at home, for jamming together, or for making a teenager's bedroom a little bit louder.

About Startone

The Startone brand is exclusive to Thomann and was established in 2005 in order to offer high-quality, playable instruments for ambitious beginners even in the lowest price bracket. This resulted in a steadily growing range of wind instruments for beginners, which has since expanded to include keyboard and stringed instruments, accordions, and even drum sets. The product range combines proven quality with low prices – and Thomann naturally provides a full three-year warranty on all Startone instruments. The brand's mission is to always provide the motivated beginner with a reliable, good-quality first instrument at an unbeatable price.

Versatile standard setup

Whether it's Pop, Rock, Funk, or Blues – with Startone's versatile shell configuration, there are no limits to what our next generation of musicians might do. It provides a solid foundation for beginners, and is equally suited to practising at home as it is for up-and-coming garage bands taking their first steps. Each set can also be expanded as required with additional cymbals, or modified or upgraded with high-quality heads and skins from brand-name manufacturers. Our tip: Use some good-sized cushions or a blanket as a damper in the bass drum – and install the set on a carpet (there are even dedicated drumming carpets), which will not only slightly improve the acoustics, but also prevent the drums from slipping if things get too heated.

Surprisingly good
Danisch 08.04.2021
I bought this set to use it as a silent kit similar to this one, but for a cheaper price.

The shells and the hardware are of surprisingly good quality with the following exceptions:
The seat foam is very weak, when you sit on it, its 5cm thickness will collapse into a few mm. I expected it to last for a few days only, however after half a year, there is still no damage yet, but the fact that the foam has zero resistance and sitting on it feels like sitting on a hard wood bench is still weird.
Some of the kickdurm lugs are deformed as well as one of the rims were quite oval. With some stretching and tweaking it is useable however. The rest is absolutely OK, after half a year they are good as new.
You cannot see this in the pics, the kit is not simply black, but the finish has sparkles, looks great in sunlight, nice surprise.

The hihat sounds nice, the crash/ride is as musical as a tin sheet would be.

The drum heads are absolutely rubbish, the material reminds me of yogurt cups. Since I use the kit with mesh head, I have no idea how it would sound with proper drumheads, so I did not want to evaluate that aspect, but I cannot send it without that. I use it with duct tape to get some sound like in this video ( kick is absolutely OK, the snare is not too nice but useable, probably replacing the cheap resonant head would make it better. I guess I would give it a 4*.

All in all, despite its minor flaws the kit is real value for money. I wish we had something like this available in the 90s, when I started to play music in my teens with very low budget.
My suggestion would that instead of the more expensive MX420, Thomann should offer a practice kit based on this set.

a
just awful out of the box, but an exceptional mod platform
awesomesauce 13.08.2024
ok, so a few months ago I recommended this kit to a friend who was buying her first kit. I had been playing drums for 6 years at the time and had enough knowledge on the topic to know that the shells don't effect your sound that much if you're dampening them with gels and rings anyway. she got a set of lovely zultan cymbals, some Gibraltar snare wires and some gels and rings and ended up with quite a nice little setup after throwing a couple of pillows into the bass drum. I finally scraped together enough money myself a few weeks ago to buy a nicer kit (I was playing an ancient pearl Maxwin kit that was literally falling apart at the time). I went for this kit after my friends success with it and bought some paiste pst3 cymbals, a ride stand (the kit doesn't provide a ride, let alone a stand), some remo ambassador heads (I didn't get reso heads for the toms), some Gibraltar snare wires and some gels and rings. it sounds and plays well. if you are getting this kit, go ahead, it's exceptionally good value, but note the following:
1. you NEED to replace the cymbals. the ones that this kit comes with are about as musical as sheets of tin, probably because they're made out of something not far off. get some cheap brand name cymbals or buy some nicer ones second hand, just don't play these.
2. get a ride stand. millennium do some decent ones for cheap
3. get damping gels and rings. put a pillow inside your bass drum and tune your drums.
4. optionally, you can make a small investment into some brand name drumheads (you can't really go wrong with anything made by evans or remo) and some snare wires to bring your sound and playing experience up a notch. my friend who got this kit broke the stock heads within 4 months of owning it.

overall it's a cheap kit that when modded out sounds really great.

The instrument was quite fine for the price it costs,
It’s a bit loud though. But it’s a good fit for a starter

Fantastic for the price

I would advise any beginner to start with this kit. Absolute value for money. If you take time to tune it properly then you will realise how good a drum kit it is.
