When using mesh heads on acoustic drums for practice this is really helpful to prevent sudden loud noises from when you would accidentally hit the rims. And it allows you to play silent rim shots as well.
It didn't fit perfectly on all my drums. For some toms I could cover only half the rim to prevent it from coming off, but that is no problem for me. For the snare I purposefully only used the rubber on the near side, so I could still play cross sticks on the actual rim.
