A beloved power amp

The t.amp E-400 is one of Thomann's best-selling stereo power amplifiers, a success that is due in no small part to the performance and features it offers for such a budget-friendly price. It features a 19"/2U rack format and provides amplification across a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz while delivering 2x310W into four ohms, which allows it to provide sound for an audience up to 50 people depending on the location. The E-400 features XLR, cinch, and 6.35mm jack inputs as well as outputs in both speaker twist and screw terminal formats, so the most commonly used connection options are covered. Safe operation is also ensured by an onboard limiter and additional protection circuits.

Reliable and user-friendly

Being a class AB amplifier, the E-400 from the t.amp delivers both a high level of efficiency and low levels of distortion. In stereo mode, the two channels operate independently of one another, while in parallel mode, the speakers are connected to both channels and receive the signal from channel A. Finally, bridged mode allows the input signal from channel A to be amplified at twice the power. The amplifier's safety features include DC, short-circuit, and over-temperature protection circuits, and it is also very user-friendly thanks to its LED indicators, which help the user to operate it safely: Each channel features a signal LED to indicate whether a signal is present, as well as a clipping LED to indicate that an overload is present (and the integrated limiter has been activated) or a short-circuit has occurred. Further LEDs in turn indicate whether the amplifier is in an unstable condition or is overheating, as well as providing information about the active operating mode. In addition, a ground lift switch is provided to help eliminate ground loops.

For solo entertainers, DJs, and bands

A wide range of users will find the answer to their specific requirements in the t.amp E-400. For example, it is suitable for event organisers looking for a compact power amplifier for fixed installation in a small live location. DJs and bands can use the E-400 as part of their home or rehearsal room setup and for live sound in bars and cafés, and it is also a great choice for both solo entertainers and compères who have their own PA system as well as for home users who need a high-quality power amp for their party room or for garden parties.

About the t.amp

the t.amp is one of the many in-house brands belonging to Musikhaus Thomann, and since 1998 has offered power amplifiers, complete passive PA sets, keyboard amplifiers, and connection systems. The brand’s entire product range delivers an impressive combination of quality and reliability at attractive prices, and users can find a convincing and affordable solution for every application: From youth clubs and sports halls through to congress centres and much more.

For small events, parties, and intimate gigs

Whether it's for the rehearsal room or a live gig, the t.amp E-400 is a reliable component for a compact band PA. For parties and intimate gigs, solo entertainers and DJs can also use this amplifier as a separate power amp for one or two subwoofers, and for outdoor sound at larger parties, two E-400s can be combined. More generally, anyone who can do without a soft start function, DSP effects, an integrated crossover, or two-ohm stability can definitely take a closer look at the t.amp E-400, while those who regularly want to transport the amplifier from place to place will appreciate both its compact height of 2U and its relatively low weight of 8.6kg.

Installation in small church
Johnf52 21.03.2014
Installed along with a pair of Evid 4.2's and A&H ZED14 desk.
Nice unit. Has very rugged feel for its cost. Effective array of input and output options, though I used the conventional xlr in and speakon out format.

For this price, nice to see it comes with built in limiters etc, though in this particular application should not be necessary. Nice clean sound at low and high levels with no perceptible coloration. Also nice are the protection relays, seldom found in units at this price.

Among the features on this unit is the "standby switch off when no, or v.low level input. For this install, had to switch this feature off, which is easy to do with slide switch above mains in. Perhaps would be nice if the features switches did not use letters or initials but plain English or somewhere (plenty of room on the back panel) there was an interpretation of the code to save looking it up in the hand book!

On the whole Thomann great amp, but PLEASE supply UK with UK mains plugs as "technically" it is now against UK regulations to chop off a German fitting and replace with a 13A plug unless you are a qualified "sparky"

Very awesome product!
Dan.D 06.10.2017
This is my first Thomann product, and I have to say it's a really great product. I use it for small parties in a medium sided room with a lounge area outside, and it fills up both areas effortlessly. Never disappointed.

The physical build quality is very good - it's very sturdy and it's made of good material. The sound quality is also impressive, especially when considering it's low price tag. It produces quite crisp sound while delivering plenty of bass.

The only issue I had is that it does not fully support mono mode. I would have used this to power one speaker (to hear both left and right channels from one speaker), however when connecting the speaker in bridged mode it only outputs sound from the source's left input channel. However that's a lack from my side as this is something that I should have researched about before, so it's not something that I can complain about. If you don't need this feature than I recommend it.

Very happy with the sound quality it delivers!

A
Good choice for this price range
Azazello 27.05.2018
I'm using this to drive hifi speakers at home.
CONS: this unit was clearly conceived to be used in PA applications. It fits in 2 rack units, has separate volume controls for the two channels and no other controls on the front panel. It has a vent which is relatively quiet for its intended purpose, but extremely noisy for home or studio applications.
PROS: while lacking in controls, the unit has many configurable options on its back panel, including input sensitivity, a ground/lift switch, an automatic standby option and very good connectivity. The vent can also be easily disconnected with almost no risk, for low power usage (ie driving small hifi or studio speakers.

I'm using this to drive two Mission LX-2 monitors. I wouldn't recommend it for serious studio applications, but it does serve its purpose extremely well for its price and while I'd rather use a more high-end amp I can definitely see myself mixing on this configurations no less than I do on monitors in a mush higher price range (Yamaha HS series, Adam F series and so on).

Plus, the unity looks rather well built to me.

A
Good Amp, Shame it has such a bad earth :(
Anonymous 17.11.2015
Was using this amp originally to drive tweeters in bi-amped hi-mid cabs, but this amp picks up even the slightest thomann earth interface! And makes a huge pop when turning the unit on or off with the dials up or midway, to a point that it blew all four tweeters! Also the heating in the venue we use it in has a thermostat with a relay and the amp thomann pops every time the heating turns on and off! It might be a fault with the amp I brought maybe? Plus I have the older version of the amp. But if using on some cheap 10 inch full range cabs its alright and has a nice but of thomann power behind it, even though its 120w a side, it sounds a lot more! Shame it has these small faults. It now justs sits in the rack as an emergency amp if all fails!
