Well worth the price

The Thomann Plastic AC is made by Focalink (as can be seen on the ridge in the product image) and I decided on getting the product after numerous reviewers recommending the Focalink plastic ocarinas.

The sound quality is nice, with a rising breath pressure (more air is needed on the higher notes). Acute bending on the higher notes is not necessary at all.

12 holes is perfect, since it enables you to play sharps and flats easier, as well as increasing the range of the ocarina somewhat. Playing with 12 holes is not really harder than playing with 10 holes.

The plastic material has the advantage of making the ocarina a lot less fragile. If I go on trips, this is the ocarina I bring along as I don't have to worry about breaking it by placing it in a backpack or in one of my pockets. It wouldn't be a biggie if you dropped it on the floor by accident, whereas a clay ocarina would most likely break.

The major downside with this ocarina is that it has some condensation issues, meaning that as saliva builds up in the mouth piece, it starts to sound airy or might not even play the notes at all. This can be quickly remedied by sucking in the saliva (as opposed to blowing it in) or by folding a piece of paper and sliding it in and out the mouth piece.

Since I got this item, I also bought the Focalink/Stein Double AC which - being a clay ocarina - does not have condensation issues. If you do not want to bother with condensation at all, spend some more money and get a clay ocarina instead.

Another advantage with the Double AC was that I felt that it feels and looks a lot more like a real instrument. The plastic AC does its job, but it looks a bit like a toy and the blue color (which might appeal to some Zelda fans) looks a bit hideous to me.

If you are curious about what it's like to play the ocarina but don't want to pay too much money to find out, this is the ocarina to get. It blows the socks out of any recorder in the same price range.

Perfect Budget Option for Beginners
MattRJ 17.10.2021
Pros:
* Sturdy plastic build - can be dropped or thrown into a bag without fear of shattering, unlike clay ocarinas. I found mine quite comfortable to hold and play, as someone with medium-sized hands.
* Very affordable for a starter ocarina.
* Good tuning - avoid those cheap Ocarina of Time ocarinas you usually see online at all costs, They tend to be very badly-tuned, which should be an absolute deal-breaker for everyone, given ocarinas aren't made to be tuned by the player, like guitars.
* Useful booklet - teaches all the basics of playing as well as fingerings for multiple pieces.

Cons:
* Moisture - plastic ocarinas condense some of the water vapour in one's breath during playing. This causes the tone to become weak and muddy eventually, requiring one to quite literally suck the water out to fix it. Clay ocarinas are porous and so do not have this problem.
* Cheap string - Mine unraveled quite easily, but the string can be replaced for almost no cost.
* Acute bending - this is a technique where one tilts their head right down when playing high notes, making them much clearer-sounding. Some ocarinas don't require this technique to sound clear, but this ocarina does.

Overall, I think the pros far outweigh the cons with this instrument, for a beginner especially. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to get started with ocarinas.

Not recommandable
OcarinaPlayer96 26.12.2017
For any Ocarina player, do not buy this. The quality is very bad it doesn't sound like a good quality ocarina at all. The quality is of a plastic little kids toy. I read a review that said it had a very clear sounds but it absolutely doesn't have that. I am ashamed that I bought this and looked forward to it and I have never been more let down in my life then by this incredibly low quality product.

Very nice sounding and sturdy ocarina
Anonymous 12.09.2014
I like this instrument very much, it also comes with a book in english and german.. And a number of famous melodies with fingering ( chart & sheet ). Also its sound is typical ocarina ( nice coucouck ) and it is made from plastic, so you can drop it, no problem ( have not tried yet ofcourse ) bud it feels very sturdy, what takes us to its weight, witch is rather heavy, bud for an unbreakable, cheap and very good ocarina it is just PERFECT :)

Don't expect more for its price.
Anonymous 05.04.2016
Still as this is entitled, I'd not recommend its purchase even though is cheap and you can't expect more.

It came untuned, the fabrication was not really clean. And what I say, still I really fell in love with the Ocarina, but I've been struggling with this one particularly. It came untuned, what I didn't know when I first play it, thinking it was my fault. A few weeks later, what I find is that it is untuned indeed, the higher notes are impossible to get, sounds really bad.

And for what I'd not recommend this ocarina, is that even though it costs very little, it is beter to pay more for a not-plastic one, because it is a really easy instrument to play and it is reeeeally fun time. So you'll want to get rid off it not in a while.

This is not like those instruments you want to buy a cheap one first to get in touch with. With ocarina you'll find in few weeks that this purchase was not good, that you could have handle with a better one, and that you NEED now to buy a better one. So, why don't buy a terracota one in first place?

I'm gettint today the Thomann 12H AC3 Terracota one, but I could have saved time and money by gettint in the first time directly.

Good choice to begin

I got the recommendation to buy this instrument(exactly this one) from a famous Ocarina player in U.S. to start practicing!
High durability(because its from plastic! :D), Good sound, and fine tune are the features of this ocarina. Its really good compare to the price. I highly recommend it to the ocarina beginners or someone who wanna try 12 holes ocarinas!

N
not the best beginner instrument
NLouis 18.10.2024
Probably a skill issue, but this one is way harder to play than my ceramic ocarina. The breath curve is very steep, so to play the high C in tune you have to blow hard enough to rival a typical train horn in terms of volume. The highest three notes are also quite finicky, prone to toneless squeaking if you don't get the breath pressure just right. It took me way longer to produce anything resembling music from this model than from my ceramic one. You can probably compensate if you're a wind instrument veteran, but if you're just a guitar/piano person casually trying to get some soothing melodies out of an ocarina, I think you're better off spending €15~20 more for a nice ceramic model.

The build quality is rock solid though. It feels like I could use it as a literal carpentry hammer without breaking it. It's quite hefty and feels much more like a proper instrument than you'd expect from the pictures.
