I've used this on DD for practice at home. It does lower the overall volume by my estimation by about 30 to 40%. No complaints

Not a musical device as such - the mute used in music is a much smaller circular shape. This is a way to preserve the sanity of anyone who happens to be in the room next to you when you are practicing.

My partner was one such individual, who happily reported that this mute reduced the volume from my double bass to a tolerable level.
