I've acquired a Xaphoon some time ago just out of a curiosity. Didn't expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised by the sound it produces, its playability and its resilience. The instrument has got few drawbacks, but after some upgrades (synthetic LEGÉRE Classic Tenor 2 reed and Vandoren mouthpiece cushion) and a lot of practice it turned out to be an instrument I tend to pick up regularly when I want to have some fun and / or fool around.
Cons:
* The mouthpiece is rather large (compared to common saxophone or clarinet mouthpieces), so somebody with a prior sax / clarinet experience needs to adjust the embouchure significantly. Not sure how this affects complete reed instrument beginners though...
* I'd recommend to stick on a mouthpiece cushion / patch as it makes the bite sensation more pleasant and it decreases a chance of the mouthpiece damage (as it's non-removable / integral part of the instrument)
* The reed it came with was quite bad. It may vary piece by piece (as all cane reeds tend to), but I'd still recommend to have couple of replacement ones just to not get discouraged at the very beginning (tenor sax 1.5 or 2 should work fine, strengths 3 and above would probably be an overkill).
* The 2nd octave requires quite a lot of skill to keep the tone pitch in tune (regardless of the reed used)
Pros:
* It's small, portable, resilient and always ready to play (especially when used with a synthetic reed)
* Has got no mechanical keys, hence it requires no maintenance whatsoever
* The sound it produces is just haunting
* Fingering, even though specific, isn't hard to master (at least for somebody who has already some experience playing a recorder or a tin whistle)
