Lasted for a long time
Very good monitors. Can be a little shrill on the hi-end, but in time you'l get used to it / correct with sonarworks etc. You'll need a sub with these to reference the low end. But overall a great pair of monitors especially for the beginner

Good reference speaker!!
Got a pair of these a few months ago, great little speaker. Compact and small don't take up much space on a desktop. Music sounds great through them - although they do lack low end. But what do you expect from a 5 inch driver?
Some information for people out there thinking that these are like the Classic Yamaha NS10s they aren't. I knew this before I bought, I just thought I would put it out there for people who are considering purchasing on that presumption. It's false advertising on Yamaha's part - check out Sound On Sounds review on the HS Series for more info! :)
I use them for reference mainly and for listening to music on whilst I'm at university.
They do the job nicely!
Nice cheap pair of monitors to own, very convenient! :)

Good for guitar recording home studio
Bought these for home studio guitar recording. In this use I can't complain. Probably have limitations when it comes to lower frequencies but for guitar recording these are good for the value.

Great speakers for the price
Good sound, raw and detailed mid and highs, although you have to have a nice room and a sub woofer or headphones to hear the low end. Great for checking guitar sounds, vocals and hi-hats, and drum punch in the high mid. Build is solid, much better than let's say Adam AX7 speakers.

Great frequency range
I use the Yamaha HS 5's for audio engineering. Great flat response for really fine tuning!

They're good
Good quality sound. Not much bass, but for they're size, wouldn't expect much. From my time with them they seem pretty accurate. Probably best beginner/ budget speaker.

Sound beyond their size and price.
Having heard the predecessor HS-50s many times in friends' houses I was happy to buy these without auditioning them first. The weight and quality of the sound is astonishing and I haven't gotten close to pushing them, even at the most hectic house parties! The sound is very natural and true, so I can see why almost any studio photo you see will have the white cone of a Yamaha HS lurking in the background. The only downside of the 5s is that they are a bit lacking at the bottom end. I supplemented them with the matching subwoofer, the HS-8S. For bass heavy music you may do likewise, or just go for the HS7s or 8s.

Decent monitors
Id read a small bit before i bought, and people seemed to bring these up in debates on forums a lot. Since they are popular, I guessed they were tried and tested. Music sounds great now, I notice a difference with flacs etc, where i didnt really before. Way more sonic clarity, great yolks altogether! Definately pricey though...
