Affordable studio-quality reference sound

Not without reason, the Yamaha HS series are among the best-selling active nearfield monitors in their category worldwide. The HS 8s are a high-performance bi-amplified system consisting of a 1" tweeter and an 8" woofer, driven by separate 45W and 75W amplifiers and housed in neatly crafted bass-reflex cabinets. Thanks to a well-thought-out design based on the manufacturer's decades of experience, the speakers are able to develop their full potential without any significant colouring at high volumes. The result is a high-quality reference sound, present throughout the entire HS series, which is both natural-sounding and balanced across the audible spectrum - and all at a distinctly affordable price.

Yamaha HS 8 Active 2-Way Nearfield Monitor

The big brother in the HS series

With its 8" bass driver, the HS 8 is at the top of the range in terms of size and power. Compared to the HS 5 and HS 7, it is lower in the sound spectrum. Yamaha specifies an impressive frequency response of 38Hz to 30kHz. The speaker is an ideal candidate for medium to large spaces. With the "Room Control" and "High Trim" features, it has two EQs, one for bass and one for treble, so that any necessary corrections can be applied, for example when the speaker is placed directly against a wall.

A reliable monitor

The Yamaha HS series of active nearfield monitors are an ideal choice for anyone looking for affordable and reliable equipment. The speakers do not flatter the sound or seek to artificially differentiate themselves from the competition with exaggerated bass and treble responses - and thus pave the way for professional quality music productions. Thanks to its 8" woofer, the HS 8 is an excellent choice for musical genres that place heavy emphasis on the bass frequency range.

About Yamaha

For decades, Yamaha has been one of the world’s best-known manufacturers of musical instruments and audio technology. The Japanese company’s long history began at the end of the 19th century with the harmonium. The product range has constantly expanded since then, which has made Yamaha one of the few manufacturers today to offer almost the entire range of existing musical instruments: From upright and grand pianos to guitars, wind instruments, and bowed string instruments and from drums and percussion to electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Yamaha is also a major force in the field of audio engineering as a manufacturer of mixing consoles, amplifiers, PA systems, and more. Yamaha's guiding principle is to combine traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology.

Ideal for the home studio or as a secondary system

Whether in a recording or mixing situation, Yamaha's HS series offers faithful sound reproduction, making it an ideal speaker for the home or project studio. But in the tradition of the famous NS-10, the HS can of course also be used as a secondary system in larger studios. With a suitable monitor controller, you can listen to your work on two different pairs of speakers and better assess the quality of your mix.

S
Best monitors in price range
SpiralD 07.06.2018
I use Yamaha HS-8 monitors in my home recording studio which I have for the last 15 years. All I can say is that after Tannoys, Alesis MKII Active and similar (all in price range 500 EUR) I finally found monitors that actually represent the true audio image. Mine mixes are now finally real mixed down tracks, and it is true what people say about these black and white beauties - if it sounds good on these monitors it will sound good on every hi-fi system.

When I was mixing and mastering with my previous monitors - I would always end up with one question: 'How I can not hear mistakes during the sessions, and I hear everything in my car, on my home stereo system etc.

Pros: I was actually aiming for Adams a7's but after reading many reviews (and due to price difference) I settled on Yamaha HS8's, and I think I am sticking to these for a looong time. I have reasonably treated room and after a few months of use, I don't think that I need and sub woofer with these monitors. Great clarity, you can hear every detail in the mix (and fix it) and definitely a joy to listen to.

Cons: After a few days of use, one monitor (which was actually B-stock monitor, the only one I found on Thomann) was making noise after 10 minutes of use. It was annoying, and for 2 weeks I was planing to write a complain to Thomann regarding this. Changed cables, playing with inputs but the noise was still there. But in the meantime a new USB audio interface arrived - Focusrite 6i6 and the noise disappeared. Conclusion: there must have been some sort of compatibility issue with my old E-MU sound card, as from the moment I installed Focusrite - no problems whatsover.

A
great piece of equipment
Anonymous 08.01.2017
So I use this speakers at home instead of a Hi-fi system. I decided to go for studio monitors mainly to avoid external amplifiers and compared to commercial compact systems, audio quality is off the roof.

Sound is really clear and sharp. Nothing feels overpowered, there is a good frequency balance and it feels flat indeed.
I used different inputs so far with all having the same performance. Direct connection to a Mac with a basic stereo cable, connected to a mixer and then to a Mac and a turntable and also with a TV. I also tried them in different rooms. In a small apartment base can be too much and you will probably need some sort of base traps. In bigger rooms on the other hand, base can be lost. I also tried them in an outdoors space where base was almost non existent.
I have to say, these speakers are loud.
All music genres where well received and the same goes for movies.

They look really really good. The illuminating Yamaha logo looks awesome. Built quality is really nice, they feels strong and durable. They are quite heavy but that's expected.

Pros:
Great sound
Great quality and looks
Very descent price

Cons:
Not magnetically sealed and it's possible to get noise interference from cellphones
Air canals are in the back meaning you can't place them against a wall
All controls are located on the back and it's not ideal to turn them on and off everyday.

All in all I highly recommend these if you have the space and the money. I'm not a producer so I can't talk about performance in a professional environment, but as an audiophile I love these speakers.

SB
Amazing sound but silly knobs
Simon Bezek 27.09.2017
The sound is brilliant. At low volume they work perfectly well, just like normal computer speakers, but as you raise the volume, the sound remains perfectly clear to the point when it hurts your ears. The whole places shakes, but no distortion appears. Thats amazing.
Bass response is sharp, spectre seems very flat, they are not boosted at all in any kind of way. It really helped me master the album I was working on for half a year, as soon as I got them. It was impossible to do it with my headphones.
This massive boxes are built and designed very good, the only thing that is silly is the controls on the back. You have to learn the location of the on / off button to hit it without looking, and volume control is just a normal knob so it takes some effort to make both speakers equally loud, because you can't how it's set since it's hidden behind.
Anyways, I would totally recommend these monitors to everybody, especially to electronic musicians / producers. I think electronic music sounds the best on these, even though metal and hard rock also sounds great. Never owned any other pair.
