Best monitors in price range
SpiralD 07.06.2018
I use Yamaha HS-8 monitors in my home recording studio which I have for the last 15 years. All I can say is that after Tannoys, Alesis MKII Active and similar (all in price range 500 EUR) I finally found monitors that actually represent the true audio image. Mine mixes are now finally real mixed down tracks, and it is true what people say about these black and white beauties - if it sounds good on these monitors it will sound good on every hi-fi system.

When I was mixing and mastering with my previous monitors - I would always end up with one question: 'How I can not hear mistakes during the sessions, and I hear everything in my car, on my home stereo system etc.

Pros: I was actually aiming for Adams a7's but after reading many reviews (and due to price difference) I settled on Yamaha HS8's, and I think I am sticking to these for a looong time. I have reasonably treated room and after a few months of use, I don't think that I need and sub woofer with these monitors. Great clarity, you can hear every detail in the mix (and fix it) and definitely a joy to listen to.

Cons: After a few days of use, one monitor (which was actually B-stock monitor, the only one I found on Thomann) was making noise after 10 minutes of use. It was annoying, and for 2 weeks I was planing to write a complain to Thomann regarding this. Changed cables, playing with inputs but the noise was still there. But in the meantime a new USB audio interface arrived - Focusrite 6i6 and the noise disappeared. Conclusion: there must have been some sort of compatibility issue with my old E-MU sound card, as from the moment I installed Focusrite - no problems whatsover.

A
great piece of equipment
Anonymous 08.01.2017
So I use this speakers at home instead of a Hi-fi system. I decided to go for studio monitors mainly to avoid external amplifiers and compared to commercial compact systems, audio quality is off the roof.

Sound is really clear and sharp. Nothing feels overpowered, there is a good frequency balance and it feels flat indeed.
I used different inputs so far with all having the same performance. Direct connection to a Mac with a basic stereo cable, connected to a mixer and then to a Mac and a turntable and also with a TV. I also tried them in different rooms. In a small apartment base can be too much and you will probably need some sort of base traps. In bigger rooms on the other hand, base can be lost. I also tried them in an outdoors space where base was almost non existent.
I have to say, these speakers are loud.
All music genres where well received and the same goes for movies.

They look really really good. The illuminating Yamaha logo looks awesome. Built quality is really nice, they feels strong and durable. They are quite heavy but that's expected.

Pros:
Great sound
Great quality and looks
Very descent price

Cons:
Not magnetically sealed and it's possible to get noise interference from cellphones
Air canals are in the back meaning you can't place them against a wall
All controls are located on the back and it's not ideal to turn them on and off everyday.

All in all I highly recommend these if you have the space and the money. I'm not a producer so I can't talk about performance in a professional environment, but as an audiophile I love these speakers.

SB
Amazing sound but silly knobs
Simon Bezek 27.09.2017
The sound is brilliant. At low volume they work perfectly well, just like normal computer speakers, but as you raise the volume, the sound remains perfectly clear to the point when it hurts your ears. The whole places shakes, but no distortion appears. Thats amazing.
Bass response is sharp, spectre seems very flat, they are not boosted at all in any kind of way. It really helped me master the album I was working on for half a year, as soon as I got them. It was impossible to do it with my headphones.
This massive boxes are built and designed very good, the only thing that is silly is the controls on the back. You have to learn the location of the on / off button to hit it without looking, and volume control is just a normal knob so it takes some effort to make both speakers equally loud, because you can't how it's set since it's hidden behind.
Anyways, I would totally recommend these monitors to everybody, especially to electronic musicians / producers. I think electronic music sounds the best on these, even though metal and hard rock also sounds great. Never owned any other pair.

Best workhorse, heart of the studio
pointfloat 03.04.2019
Have been using these for quite some time now, probably around 5 years. They have been stable and great sounding since day one. Lots of bass, clear mids, not muddy. Also very nice to listen music on, but still quite neutral in mixing process.

Recently, one of the monitors took a fall from 1,5m and slammed to the ground. And guess what, sounds exactly the same, no damage whatsoever internally. Obviously scratches and bruises on the enclosure, but that's it.

Pros:
- built like a tank
- Sounds neutral and beautiful as well
- Good bass, no need for sub in most cases (music)
- Nice stereo image when placed correctly
- Great price

Cons:
- None really

Awesome speakers
Harrydrum 07.11.2023
I’ve been through many studio monitors and I’ve found myself returning to where I started, with the HS8. The simple No nonsense engineering of these yamaha speakers gives a realistic flat response and they remain solid as they always have been, affordable and top quality speakers. Superb delivery by Thomann as always!

Wow! Just wow!
NunoAC 24.11.2021
I sincerely couldn't believe the quality this speakers deliver. I was afraid of having them in a smaller room than recommended but they work amazing at lower volumes also. The definition is outstanding. Thomann shipping is also to praise as both speakers and boxes arrived without a single scratch.

CR
Excellent quality at its price range!
Cal Richard 22.06.2018
I was aiming to buy myself a pair of ADAM A7X monitors for my home studio (of medium to large dimensions) but found the price too steap for my budget, so I settled on the HS 8. And I'm glad I did.

When I saw the price I was worried mainly about sound quality and frequency response but ended up suprised. They have a surprisingly relatively flat EQ curve, the tweeter isn't as shrill or tiring to the ear as most speakers of it's price range, the 8 inch drivers do a very fair job with encompasing all medium and low frenquencies without creating much of a "muddied" effect. The only things I will say against the sound is that the general med frequencies sound just a little "cardboardy" (due to the paper drives), you can tell especially with kick drums. And the other problem is that these speakers are a little too big for nearfield monitors, they work best as midfield ones, the results sound clearner and more precise at about a 1 1/2 meters distance (it will aslo depend on your room's dimensions).

One other slight problem is that the gain knobs on the back should have a notch feel rather than smooth one so you can be sure you have them at equal values.

Overall these Monitors work as very good midfield monitors regardless of price and are unsurprisingly becoming a standard in all home studios. Probably best speakers you'll find at this price range.
