Versatile headphones

With the ATH-M series, Audio-Technica offers a whole range of closed-back, studio-oriented monitoring headphones for every budget. What they all have in common is a very solid construction, delicate sound reproduction with slight emphasis on the bass and treble ranges, and a circumaural design that is very comfortable to wear even during long sessions. The ATH-M models have comparatively low impedance. Accordingly, they can be used at a reasonable volume level with mobile devices that do not have the output power of a headphone amplifier or interface. Thanks to their good sound isolation, the headphones are also quite suitable for DJs and in noisy environments.

A solid affair

The ATH-M20x is the most affordable model in Audio-Technica's ATH-M series and features 40mm drivers powered by neodymium magnets and CCAW coils. The sound is impressive and can definitely compete with much higher-priced headphones. The construction is simple but solid. The ATH-M20x headphones are well padded and can be adjusted to any position. On the left-hand side, there is a fixed three-metre cable that ends in a 3.5mm jack plug. An adapter to 6.3mm jack is included in the scope of delivery. The ear cups can be swivelled by 90 degrees.

A lot of headphones for the money

The closed-back design and good sound isolation of the ATH-M20x make it the ideal companion for loud recording sessions where, for example, a drum kit is being recorded in the same room. In turn, it also ensures less crosstalk in vocal recordings when the singer is recording over loud backing. Thanks to their linear frequency response, the headphones also excel at production and mixing tasks. For DJs who like the circumaural design, the ATH-M20x offers sufficient sound isolation and adequate volume to pre-listen even in loud clubs. If you're looking for headphones just for enjoying music, you'll be impressed by the refined treble reproduction and tight bass for this price category.

Great value for money

Bought this unit for my home studio setup. Didn't want to spend a lot, because I usually use my speakers, and only need headphones for vocal tracking, and occasional online calls.

The price/performance is hardly beatable. M20X's are cheap and of reasonable quality. No issues with the physical build, and the frequency response is comparable with much more expensive sets.
Also, I use SoundID Reference by Sonarworks to calibrate the sound, so I have no issues with the sound whatsoever.

The plastic is sturdy. This isn't the first pair of M20X's that I've used, and they have not broken while I'm using them.

The noise isolation isn't amazing, and helps more with isolating the sound from inside the headphones bleeding into the mics than the other way around. However, I don't particularly need this unit for high noise isolation.

The headphones are comfy enough for sessions, although they feel a bit stiff on my head. Hopefully I'll break them in.

In conclusion - one of the best options within this price range.

impressed

i have owned the m40x and m50 for years and bought this as a spare, but wow! it sounds much flatter and a lot less artificially "hyped" than its more expensive brethren. a little harsh around the high mids extending to the low treble range (slightly harsh S's), but that's about it. it sounds more neutral overall and a lot better for mixing, in my opinion. i guess its less exciting sound and cheaper make is a little off putting for most people, but it sounds great to me. i can listen for hours on end without fatigue. quite surprised and impressed. tight bass (super deep with sonarworks!), great sound isolation and comfortable to wear (uncomfortable at first but it stretched to accommodate my big head). i definitely recommend these puppies!

This headphone is very good for the price. I using it for home recording guitars, mixing with DAW's, etc.
I wanted to buy the ATH-M50, but for my purposes this is very good also... Perfect sounding, very good isolation from the outer noises, comfortable to wear long time. And the price is much-much lower.
I'am very happy with it, and recommend it!
