The ear pads are made of a very comfortable and very soft material and coating. The drawback is that the coating material wears off relatively quickly and is quite delicate? this will result in pieces of coating material getting off the ear pads and attaching to everything else? not something to like about these headphones. The headphones are good but due to the easy wear and tear of the product I would not recommend these headphones at all? Just get a different set of headphones in my humble opinion (problem solved once and for all as otherwise you will need more and more ear pads). In addition, besides the ear pads, other parts of the headphones are covered with the same material... these parts are non replaceable however? not good.

AT M40 and D40 Earpads - Black dandruff
Paulo Miranda 18.08.2022
Audio Technica's replacement earpads for their M40 and D40 headphones are exactly like the original: confortable.
Problem is they're not very durable.
They withstand regular cleaning with a soft alcohol embedded tissue but they don't do well with beards or rough side-burns in musician's faces.
The black cover in the earpads is slowly turned into a mess of black particles that attach to the skin, get lost in the hair (if you have any) and stick to your hands.
Thay last for months but, for me, that's not enough!
Of course they're not real leather, wich would last much longer but still they're very confortable.
Assembly of the replacement earpads must/should be done with patience and care as it's not the simplest endeavour one can do with headphones. Don't use any sharp tools when trying to install them as the attaching edge can rip easily. Be patient and slowly wrap the edge around the headpiece, inch by inch.
Take your time.
Best thing in these? They're made for some of the best headphones around: Audio Technica's M40 and the "bassist friendly" model D40.

Original replacement... hard to find.
Peter NR 17.04.2021
My old ATH M40 fs pads were worn out. They are hard to find and generic oval pads don't fit the M40 fs phones. These are original AT pads and are exactly like the originals.
