Those 80s analogue sounds are back

With the Pro-1, Behringer has resurrected a range of classic analogue sounds straight out of the 80s. Equipped with two oscillators, two ADSR envelopes, an LFO, and a sequencer, it allows you to recreate the vintage sounds that helped shape the hits of artists such as Depeche Mode, the Pet Shop Boys, and Vince Clark. The monophonic Pro-1 is semi-modular and thus has multiple inputs and outputs for patching on the upper part of the control surface, where external modulation sources can be connected. The Behringer Pro-1 uses its own replica of the Curtis CEM-3340 chips featured in vintage classics such as the Prophet-5, Memory Moog, and Oberheim OB-Xa.

Clear modulation matrix

The two oscillators can create "sawtooth" and "pulse width" waveforms, while oscillator B is also able to implement a triangular waveform. In addition, the Behringer Pro-1 also has an onboard noise generator. On the left is a separate section for modulation settings, where modulation sources and their destinations can be set in a clear manner. For example, the pulse width of oscillator A can be set to be modulated by oscillator B, by the LFO, or by the filter envelope. Should these options still not be sufficient, a patch cord can also be used to control the cut-off frequency of the filter.

Nostalgia comes included

Nostalgic synth fans can recreate the sounds from their favourite 80's music productions thanks to the Behringer Pro-1. Using the poly chain function, the Behringer Pro-1 can be easily integrated into performances as a Eurorack unit, allowing up to 16 external devices to be linked. The DIP switch on the back of the device can be used to select which of the four channels is to receive MIDI data. In addition, the Behringer Pro-1 has a USB port that allows it to be accessed by modern DAWs. Synth newcomers can also use it as a point of entry to the world of analogue synthesizers with classic sounds, guaranteeing hours of fun experimentation.

About Behringer

The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. The acquisition of other companies, including Midas, Klark Teknik, and TC Electronic, meant that new product groups were added - and also resulted in the technical expertise of these companies being incorporated into product development.

Variations galore thanks to extensive modulation options

Basic FM synthesis is also possible with the Behringer Pro-1 by using oscillator B as a modulation source for the frequency of oscillator A. The Drone control is ideal for keeping the VCA open and allowing the sounds to pass through without an envelope. This function can be used to create sound effects by combining the noise generator and the filter, for example. And with the sequencer, complex melodies can be composed using the Pro-1's memory capacity of up to 64 notes.

True value-for-money synth

What Behringer did by adding a small patch bay really brings the initial Pro One synth architecture to modern times. The capabilities, especially when using stack cables, are numerous. Coming from a VST-only background, this module was a massive breath of fresh air for me, especially because of the feedback loop options. To clarify, I am not referring just to audio feedback, but even feedback routing like Mixer Out to OSC PWM.

As for the sound, it is capable of deep bass for sure, but where it shines is the higher frequencies. The oscillators have crisp, clear highs, and the Curtis filter is beautifully paired with them. Because of this (by default) bright sounding setup of components, I found the Pro-1 cutting through my mixes where Diva or other VSTs were lost, even when purposefully drowning them in long reverb. (as you do)

I use this module for both clear melodic content, and experimental music sound design, and I thoroughly enjoy it in both.

The cons I could spot where that, some features are hidden and need to be looked up online, and the Resonance CV tends to get loud easily.

The Bad, the PRO and the 1 !

My First Dream Synth (well... the original SC Pro-One)!

The Behringer Pro-1 is a faithful recreation of the legendary Sequential Circuits Pro-One synthesizer, beloved by musicians and producers for its iconic sound and versatile features. As a fan of vintage synthesizers, I was eager to explore what the Pro-1 had to offer, and it exceeded my expectations in many ways.

First and foremost, the build quality of the Pro-1 is exceptional. Behringer has done an excellent job of capturing the look and feel of the original Pro-One, with its sleek design and sturdy construction. The layout is intuitive and user-friendly, making it easy to dive in and start creating sounds right out of the box.

Sound-wise, the Pro-1 delivers the classic analog warmth and character that made the original Pro-One famous. The authentic VCOs (Voltage-Controlled Oscillators) and filters faithfully reproduce the distinctive sound of the original instrument, with rich basses, searing leads, and everything in between. The inclusion of additional features like oscillator sync and filter FM further expands its sonic palette, allowing for a wide range of sounds and textures.

One of the standout features of the Pro-1 is its extensive modulation capabilities. With two envelopes and an LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator), as well as a versatile modulation matrix, I've been able to create complex and evolving sounds with ease. The inclusion of a sequencer and arpeggiator adds even more creative possibilities, allowing for intricate patterns and rhythms.

Another highlight of the Pro-1 is its connectivity options. In addition to standard MIDI connectivity, it also features CV/Gate inputs and outputs, making it easy to integrate into a modular setup or control external gear. The inclusion of USB connectivity further enhances its versatility, allowing for easy integration with modern studio setups.

Overall, the Behringer Pro-1 is a fantastic synthesizer that pays homage to a classic instrument while also offering modern features and enhancements. Whether you're a seasoned synthesist or a newcomer to the world of analog synthesis, the Pro-1 is sure to inspire creativity and exploration.

(Pro) 1 problem - getting it in tune is more difficult than catching an Unicorn... Nothin' is Perrrfect! ;)

Conclusion: BUY IT!

A source of inspiration

Very well build quality, amazing sound (really takes you back...) and enough features to spark your creativity. The first time you played on this thing, time passes by as you fiddle with the controls and just listen to this beauty. Add a little bit of post-processing to this and you've got yourself a nice sounding new asset. I suggest taking a look at this video for a good explanation on every feature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9rSB-72UAg

PRECIOUS - MUST HAVE

True analog sound, so warm, crisp, raw!
This synth is excellent for Basses, Drones, Arps/Seqs & FX.
Especially when grouped with FX pedals or VST FX, it can traverse dimensions!

The vintage Prophet 1 is among my favourite synths but out of reach nowadays, so I’m over the moon with this recreation which seems completely faithful to the original with some added features. It’s a precious piece of gear which should be in every studio!
