Compact digital mixer

The Behringer X Air XR12 is a digital mixer for live and studio use that can be controlled remotely using an iPad or Android and Linux tablets. The compact, rack-mountable mixer uses the same technology as the popular Behringer X32 and packs 12 inputs into the smallest of spaces, in addition to offering storable preamp settings, and an extra feature in the form of a built-in USB recorder. Featuring latency-free digital effects and channel equalisers for a professional sound as well as two AUX outputs for easy monitoring, the mixer also comes complete with an automixing function. Insert effects can also be looped into the master channel to create the perfect sound, while users can additionally take advantage of the built-in equaliser and internal dynamics processing function. The Behringer X Air XR12 is supplied complete with rack ears and corner protectors, making it ready for immediate use. And the icing on the cake: The manufacturer offers a three-year warranty on the mixer.

12 inputs and high-quality preamps

The 12 inputs on the Behringer X Air XR12 comprise four microphone connections with programmable preamps and eight connections for line-level signals. Midas preamps guarantee a crystal-clear, high-quality sound and playback devices such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, and MP3 players can also be connected up to the line inputs. The USB connection provides a data backup and update-loading facility, and even allows stereo recording courtesy of the integrated recorder. The Wi-Fi interface also allows the Behringer X Air XR12 to be controlled remotely and conveniently by app. The Behringer mixer uses a three-band rather than a two-band Wi-Fi module for this purpose, which ensures faster and more stable connections when working wirelessly with multiple devices. For artists wishing to record their performances, the internal recorder can send stereo recordings to the USB port on the Behringer X Air XR12 in an uncompressed WAV format.

Sound on sound

The app-based remote control function operated via the Wi-Fi interface will be a hit for anyone wishing to use the Behringer X Air XR12 in a well-concealed position on stage or at a certain distance in the rehearsal room, or wanting to access personal settings when the device is being operated by several users at the same time. The Behringer X Air XR12 can also be easily integrated into existing LAN networks via an ethernet socket or used to start a dedicated local network. Artists who expect a high-quality mix will also find they make a good return on their investment here, as the internal digital effects section permits the addition of premium sound effects to up to four stereo and eight mono channels – including reverb from legendary Lexicon devices such as the 480L and the PCM70. For dynamic processing, users of the Behringer X Air XR12 can utilise plug-in emulations of the Teletronix LA-2A, the Urei 1176LN, or the Fairchild 670, and friends of established studio sound will also find the equaliser sound of their dreams in the digital replica of the Pultect EQP-1a.

About Behringer

The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. The acquisition of other companies, including Midas, Klark Teknik, and TC Electronic, meant that new product groups were added - and also resulted in the technical expertise of these companies being incorporated into product development.

All at the touch of a button

The Behringer X Air XR12 is also the mixer of choice for DJs, singer-songwriters, and solo entertainers as well as a live, studio, and rehearsal room mixer for bands. Remote control operation via app or MIDI controller also ensures stress-free use of the mixer in all situations. In addition, beginners can make use of the Behringer X Air XR12's ready-made EQ presets, while advanced users can make all of the fine EQ settings personally and track these visually via the app. DJs can listen to their mix using the headphone jack on the front of the mixer, and bands can use the AUX outputs to provide up to two of their band members with monitor mixes. The storable preamp settings will benefit users wishing to use the mixer in a rehearsal room, then on the go as a DJ or wedding singer. A consistent signal level is provided courtesy of the automixing function when mixing speeches, panel talks, and discussions involving multiple microphones, thus preventing the occurrence of typical problems such as feedback and comb filter effects.

The New XR12
Jayboy 16.05.2015
I'll jump straight into this by saying that this XR12 is solid. Behringer are always considered the next best thing with their gear but this is as good as it gets. There's not much on the hardware side to shout about apart from the sockets - excellent quality and gives a confident connection. There are 2U rack ears included if you want to use them.

It's early days for this technology and the available apps will be where it scores the most against the competition. Having said that, you may already know about the x32 engine running the show and I am impressed with effects available. Once you work out how this mixer works without having an in depth manual, then you can appreciate it's uses. The app differs slightly across platforms with PC/Mac giving better control and other features than iOS or Android...

So to summarise a few questions I never found the answers to before I bought this, here's an explanation... The are four effects slots from the dozens of FX's available, only one can be assigned as system to the main output but set as an insert, any channel can access any four. There are 12 physical inputs but 16 channels to mix with so you can specify a route for example: Mic on input One going to channels 1, 12 and 13 for mixing. (it's complicated but possible) also, There's EQ available on every channel, Main and FX and so much more. I'm having a lot of fun with this unit and as Behringer have promised more with updates in the future I am looking forward to that to.
Thanks for reading.

Sorry I didn't take the plunge before
Paul914 28.03.2022
Busy solo singer/guitarist, I used a powered desk and effects rack up to now, this unit replaced the effects rack and the desk. Paired with an LD
G2 system, perfect for most small venues. Less weight to drag around, less space taken up in the van and on stage. Quicker set up time too, there are no real downsides to this. The effects are very usable although as an audio nerd I would have put more than 4 effects at a time (minor problem). As per online chatter I used an external travel router (€49) to avoid drop outs, no problems yet. Running on and old jacked Amazon Fire 7" with no issues if you don't mind the small screen.
In the process of acquiring a pair of FBT Ventis 112a's for larger venues.
Sockets all seem solid, unit itself is chunky and feels solid too. I would highly recommend moving to one of these if like me you value weight, space , and set up time.

ZM
Great mixer!
Zdravko M. 20.11.2018
Well, let me say this...
This is the best peace of equipment that I ever bought.
I've been using it for 2 years now, for more then 200 live gigs, and it never failed.
What you get in this small, light and easy to carry black box is just awesome!
It has everything that you could possibly think of...only if you need more channels, but then you have other versions of this product.
So, you get all the channels you need, all the effects that you need, and then some more...equalizers, usb port, so you can reproduce music, or record it live...and one of the best things - everything is controlable with their app that you can download for free, on your tablet, phone, or something like that, so you can move around the place, and make the sound that you desire without running back and forth all the time. It's so small and convenient that you'll never think of carrying around any of those big, heavy pieces of equipment.
The only down side - there were some situations when the wireless connection was unstable, or couldn't make a connection. That happens when there are too many wireless signals in the area. In that situations you need an extra router so you can make a good connection. So, that's not really a big problem, if you can even call it like that...
All in all, this is a great product and I highly reccomend it!

Perfect for rehearsals and gigs without sound-man
myka 13.03.2019
We use it for rehearsals and gigs without sound-man.
It is really useful and powerful tool for rehearsals and gigs. Here comes the arguments:
It saves a lot of gear setting up time by saving mixer settings on your mobile app during rehearsals and loading saved settings before gig.
It is lifesaver for solo, duet or trio artists because it makes playing without sound-man possible by giving remote access to the mix.
32 band eq on stereo out makes saved mixer settings sound the best in almost any environment.
This device has nice effects and you can use up to 4 in one time. Once setup is ready, these effects can be accessed on each physical input channel. I use chorus, delay and reverb for acoustics. For vocals I use compressor and reverb. Did I mentioned graphical EQ? There are a lot more very useful features that I won't mention but it's there.
It is really rugged peace of equipment and build quality is really well.
App can be confusing sometimes but once your how to do stuff, it is no more confusing.
Final word: I'm blessed to be born in times when such a very portable (fits in bag-pack with all leads and mics) digital mixer/effects block/ remote control/super audio signal managing tools are so affordable. Thanks behringer and thanks Thomann.de
