We’re rolling, and… action!

The ATEM Mini Pro from Blackmagic Design is a compact video mixer that offers professional-quality multi-camera production in real time and delivers an impressive price-performance ratio. It has connections for up to four HDMI inputs (e.g. for digital cameras, computers, games consoles, and more) and two audio inputs in 3.5mm jack format, making video production uncomplicated, and its operation is highly intuitive. Users can directly switch between the connected sources on the device, add picture-in-picture, transition, and chroma keying (better known as green screen and blue screen) effects, and even integrate their own graphics. The results can then be transferred to the user’s computer – which will recognise the ATEM Mini Pro as a webcam – via the USB-C interface: The ideal setup for streaming to platforms like YouTube and Facebook as well as for innovative business presentations via video chat.

Plug & play

Any device with an HDMI output – whether it’s a digital camera, computer, smart device, games console, or DVD/Blu-ray player – can be connected to the ATEM Mini Pro without difficulty, and its ease of use is exemplary. Cuts and effect transitions can be made between the connected video sources using keys 1 to 4 on the user interface. The audio source can be set to match the selected HDMI source or permanently assigned – to the two additional 3.5mm jack connections for line and microphone signals, for example. The integrated encoder automatically converts all incoming signals to H.265 and up to 1080p and 60fps, so the video format is always taken care of – if only things could always be that simple!

About Blackmagic Design

Founded in 2001, the Australian company Blackmagic Design is one of the world's leading pioneers and manufacturers of creative video technology. Known for its outstanding codecs, Blackmagic offers professional technology at affordable prices. The manufacturer demonstrated this in 2002 with the release of the DeckLink capture card. This enabled the editing of uncompressed 10-bit video material on a Macintosh OS X system. The products of the ATEM Live series are used in major productions worldwide. Grant Petty, founder and CEO of the company, describes the guiding principle of his company itself as follows: "Blackmagic Design strives to make video of the highest quality affordable to everyone so that production and television can become a truly creative industry."

Mini or Mini Pro?

They may look almost identical, but there are decisive differences between the ATEM Mini and the ATEM Mini Pro. The ATEM Mini provides an ideal solution for real-time live streaming and for giving presentations that comes at a budget-friendly price, while the Pro version adds several extra functions whose relevance is determined by what is expected from the device. The ATEM Mini Pro’s USB-C connection means that video signals can be recorded direct to USB drive in H.264 format, and even to multiple hard drives simultaneously or successively by using a hub, making pre-production and backups child’s play. An integrated hardware streaming engine also makes streaming possible without a computer. The HDMI output can be controlled directly from the mixer and additionally provides a multiview for four cameras, previews for individual angles and media, and status information for recordings, streams, and audio.

Fantastic Product

Everybody is still in a euphoric state of mind about this Atem Mini Pro. I must admit that it includes me. However I can think of a few minors. I bought the Atem to reduce my editing time by changing to more 'live editing' during the broadcast or recording and to be able to live switch camera's without problems. I mainly record or live-stream smaller (sports)events.
Plusses besides the normal specs:
- Buttons feel great and weight of unit is enough
- (wireless) control via Atem software and other apps works perfect
- Recording and streaming in different compressions/quality is great
- Atem software functions offer a lot of possibilities
- Lots of youtubers posted lots of great explaining tutorials
Minors:
- Only hdmi input1 is forgiving with a little weaker signal strength, the other inputs require high strength hdmi signal. (You need the best cables and I am taking no risk and am converting all longer then 5 meter distances to SDI connections with converters. (not tested yet)
- Hdmi ports are always fragile. Use good connectors and make sure cables don't pull.
- Recording and streaming in different qualities at the same time is impossible.

Small but powerful, and at an amazing price
chalker_and_talker 04.01.2021
I won't go through what this device can do as the tech specs on the product listing should be sufficient there.

What I will say is that this is remarkably powerful yet extremely easy to use - just connect in all the devices you need and it just.... works.

The basic functionality on the board is more than sufficient to run even complicated Zoom calls/webinars (I teach university workshops online) and is also capable of handling on-the-fly editing when creating pre-recorded content.

The ATEM Software Control application gives additional functionality and control (particularly over audio - which is lacking on the board), and allows you to control the device over your network (i.e. without requiring a USB connection to your machine).

But it is the macros where this device shines - allowing you even greater configurability than offered by the board or the Software Centre. For example, many users complain about the small size of the Picture-in-Picture box. With macros you can change this to the size - and *shape* - that you want. I even have macros which changes which HDMI input is used for the PiP. And while you are not able to override the function of buttons on the board with your macros, this pairs nicely with the Elgato Stream Deck to give you physical buttons to cue up complex combinations of macros.

I really do like this device. And its absolutely amazing what it does for the price.

A small box wiht big features
SONICrider 14.09.2022
Using this ATEM mini pro some time now and it never disappointed me: good built, easy to use, almost plug and play. Created an OCS tool on my iPad to control it wireless in the studio.

Price - quality 100%

If there is a "con" - the unit produces some noise which can be heard in a studio environment. Personally no problem since I record without microphone - althpught I think the noise isn't that loud a microphone would pick it up.

Bonne console video
A suivre
