Authentic tube amp tone

The Boss GX-100 is a multi-effects board for electric guitar and electric bass that offers digital emulations of 23 amp types and over 150 Boss effects covering everything from classic effects through to octavers and other more exotic options, of which 15 effect blocks can be used simultaneously. With a wide selection of onboard speaker types and support for loading WAV speaker impulse responses, its tube amp tone not only sounds authentic, but also feels realistic when playing. Its colour touchscreen display ensures simple operation, and users also have a whopping 200 memory locations for storing customised sound combinations. Additional presets for this board can be downloaded from Boss Tone Exchange and shared with other users.

Flexible options and a looper

The sleekly designed Boss GX-100 stands out thanks to its flexibility and adaptability. For example, AIRD Output Select types perfectly tailors the output signal for any destination, whether it's an amp input, FRFR monitor, or PA system. In addition to a freely assignable footswitch, an expression pedal with a toe switch is also on board, and the effects unit also offers familiar modern features such as an integrated looper. It processes audio signals internally with 32-bit floating point processing, and almost all of the inputs and outputs are implemented as 6.3mm jack sockets in mono and stereo. A tuner is naturally also included, and the rear panel features a ground/lift switch to prevent ground loops.

Impressive connectivity

The Boss GX-100's headphone jack is ideal when practising at home as well as for monitoring during recording sessions. Guitarists looking for flexibility will find an instrument input as well as an AUX input, and the device's line output is supplemented by a direct output. It also offers a MIDI interface with an input and output as well as a USB port that outputs multi-channel audio in 48kHz/24-bit quality. With buttons that don't have complicated multiple assignments, the GX-100 is a breeze to use, and this means that patches, effects, parameters, and signal chains can be customised intuitively without a steep learning curve, while the numerous LEDs provide important status information. The GX-100 is thus a great choice for anyone who can easily do without battery operation.

About Boss

The Boss brand has been an important part of the Japanese Roland Corporation since the mid-1970s and has caused a sensation from its inception, especially with its compact effect pedals but also multi-effect units and other helpful tools for guitarists. The company's single effect pedals in particular are legendary and can be found in almost every guitarist's home. An incredible 15 million have been sold to date. With its Katana series, the manufacturer now also offers excellent amplifiers at a very interesting price point.

Combinable, expandable, and robust

With its send-return loop, the Boss GX-100 can be easily combined to form a chain with other effects units . The device is particularly easy to set up on a computer using the Boss Tone Studio software, which is compatible with both macOS and Windows, and users who want to use an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet and/or stream the sound wirelessly can expand the GX-100 with an optional Bluetooth adapter. Its metal housing is sturdy enough to withstand the demands of on-stage and studio use, though users who intend to take the Boss GX-100 to gigs should bear in mind that the board weighs 3.5kg and is almost half a metre wide.

Unbeatable at this price point

This unit is incredible for the price. I remember most modelling pedals being cheap and beginner level about a decade ago but it's not the case these days. The GX is very well built, heavier than I expected. Every switch is fully programmable and customizable, per patch. Can also send MIDI CCs per switch, so I've mapped some switches in Ableton Live for scene scrolling and launching. The display is great but the unit can be used without heavily relying on the touch screen and instead by using buttons and encoders. The rotary encoders feel great, are not cheap, are indented and 'click in'. The four rotaries below the display can be mapped to any parameter within the patch for quick access. Very logical and straightforward UI, doesn't take long to learn. The blocks (hexagons) are color coded by category. No latency to speak of when playing and switching patches. A separately sold Bluetooth module can be purchased for editing of patches on an iPad or phone, so you don't have to crouch constantly. I've literally recreated my own rig (amp, stompboxes) on the GX-100 and couldn't believe how good it sounded and responded to touch, so I'm selling everything and keeping this as my main amp/effects unit. Near-infinite possibilities in patching, routing and assigns, including the expression pedal, which has good travel and sensitivity. Time based effects such as delays can be tempo synced to an incoming MIDI clock, or you can set the GX to be a master clock and send a MIDI Start/Stop from one of the switches. BPM can be set per patch also. The looper module seems to be basic because obviously Boss won't eat into its own looper market with the GX. I couldn't find a way to sync the looper to the internal or external clock or quantize the bars, so it's just a basic looper for quick ideas, with you as the reference in timing. Maybe it'll get better with an update but it's just a minor con for me.
Overall, I'm very impressed with the GX-100 and would recommend it if you're in the market for a swiss army knife of a modeller on a moderate budget.

Very good product with accurate preamp modelling. Custom impulse responses can enrich it's preamp collection. Lots of useful and accurately modelled effects. Easy handling straight on the unit itself, I find intuitive and very easy to get used to,Tone studio also makes even easier. I can't think of something negative to say. I only have it about a month I will update if needed.

A
Awesome multi-effect pedal but...
Anonymous 29.03.2023
Just jumped into GX100 coming from the old GT3. Sound is awesome, easy of use is absolutely stunning (wouldn't go for the 1000 until I can afford a sound engineer), quality is perfect but Slicer has disappeared from it... Obviously if you were not using it you won't notice but if you were you will have to solve it by buying it or other pedals and plugging them via send-return. In any case worth to recommend an spectacular multi-effect pedalboard with a professional sound and full ability for setting up all kind of parameters per effect, all kind of possibilities when working on manual mode (1 pedal may be assigned to start 1, 2 or n effects if you wish), you may set up an effect and create copies for each of your guitars. A pleasure to work with such technology.

High quality, robust guitar effects processor
mtsv 23.01.2024
After using a pedalboard with analog pedals for years, I've decided to go towards the digital way, since the stages in the halls I play have limited space, and placing & miking an amp/pedal board is pretty hard. So after looking various alternatives, I chose Boss GX-100. After using it in couple of gigs, here are my thoughts:
Pros
+ Sturdy chassis, I mean it is strong, no plastics
+ I liked the sounds of the amps and pedals, it is Bossy :)
+ Many outputs inc. send/return, controls. You can connect it anyway you like
+ It's software and extra BT dongle helps you connect to computers and phones
+ The dimensions are good for compact floor space
+ It has a touch screen while you still can use the knobs,
+ Broad programming possibilities, you can do almost anything you like (within the units capabilities)

Cons
- The touch screen is not the best amongst rivals I presume (still, it works)
- I would like to see an XLR out port
- As valid for almost all digital units, the factory presets are useless to me

To sum up, I liked the unit and will keep it using in my gigs. I've created my own patches from scratch (around 25) to use on stage by directly connecting it to the FoH mixer.
