Compact near-field high-end monitor

The JBL LSR 305P MkII is an active two-way near-field monitor with an impressive price-to-sound ratio. As the most compact member of the American manufacturer's 3 series, this monitor features some of the most efficient concepts from JBL’s considerably more costly M2 monitors. The tweeter's patented Image Control Waveguide ensures a large sweet spot and an accurate representation of the stereo panorama, while the double-flanged bass reflex channel on the rear panel enables powerful bass reproduction regardless of the size of the housing.

The frequency response of a larger model

Thanks to its special bass reflex technology, the compact JBL LSR 305P MkII can reach bass ranges that other five-inch devices can only dream of. The frequency response starts at a remarkable 43 Hz and extends all the way up to 22 kHz. A high performance and extremely precise transient response are the result of the newly revised driver design. The rear panel includes a set of controls for bass roll-off and high shelf filter which allow you to make adjustments to match the sound of the room. The five-inch woofer and the one-inch tweeter are both fed by separate power amplifiers with an output of 41 watts each.

Stylistically diverse

The JBL LSR 305P MkII brings the advantages of a good frequency response, a large sweet spot, and a clear transient response to all musical genres. No matter if you’re an EDM producer, hip hopper, singer-songwriter, or metalhead, if you're after an inexpensive monitor that just sounds great, the LSR 305P MkII has everything you need. Even in areas which are not exclusively music-related, such as post-production for podcasts or YouTube videos, this speaker offers a reliable basis for assessing your sound.

About JBL

JBL is an American company founded by James B. Lansing in 1946, which first went under the name of Lansing Sound Inc. Following legal disputes with Lansing's previous company, Altec Lansing, Lansing Sound Inc. changed its name first to James B. Lansing Sound Inc., and then finally to JBL in 1949. JBL's current headquarters are based in Los Angeles, USA. The company is well known for its audio system equipment, including loudspeakers and headphones, and is divided into two branches: JBL Consumer, which is dedicated to the consumer sector, and JBL Professional, which is focused on the professional audio sector and offers equipment for studios, live applications, and cinemas. JBL has been a part of Harman International Industries Inc. since 1969, which in 2017 became a subsidiary of the Samsung Group.

In the studio and on the road

The JBL LSR 305P MkII's specifications make it suitable for use in spaces of all sizes, including smaller rooms and conventional bedroom studio setups, which are often prone to problems with bass reproduction. Thanks to its compact dimensions and low weight of just 4.5 kg per speaker, this two-way system is also an excellent choice for mobile recording sessions.

Excellent value for money

Excellent value for money, with a strong sound stage and a good amount of bass - not completely flat so perfect for casual listening - music, movies, etc. They also work well in larger rooms as a portable audio system as they're not too heavy so you can carry them around on your shoulder in the Gator G-STUDIOMON1 bag also available here if you don't want to buy a full PA system.

They do have a noticable hiss which is fine in my use case but you will be able to hear it in a smaller room when nothing is playing. If that bothers you seek a different product. The hiss is constant at all volumes. Also worth noting don't try turning these up to 10 and play films through without normalization, if you hit something that peaks the audio output like an explosion the speakers briefly cut off and the driver restarts. 6-7 is the sweet spot for me, but will depend on your audio source.

Build quality is okay but don't expect anything premium, things aren't glued flush for example. These speakers are much more about the sound for the price than overall build quality.

Works well with the JBL LSR310S subwoofer if you want extended bass response (or added earthquakes) in your setup.

As a owner of the previous LSR305, I bought this second pair blindly.

Sound wise, they are as great as ever and maybe even better. Zero complain here.

There is still the same hiss. Quite annoying, can be reduced by lowering the volume to get the best compromise noise/signal.
An auto standby mode shuts the amp completely after some time so no more hiss when unused. That's better than nothing, but I would have preferred a reduced hiss.

However the real pain with the LSR305P is a new permanent coil whine.
It doesn't come from tweeter nor the woofer. It comes from the back, the power supply to my guess.
It's pretty high pitch and faint so I tried to just ignore it but after three days there is still a few moments of the day when I find this ringing way too annoying. Even at 2 meters away.
Unplugging every electronic device in the room did nothing. The only way to remove that ringing is to power off the speakers.

Excellent speakers! Great value for money!
Random_Mus1c_guy 11.06.2024
I use these speekers pretty much for everything; movies, music, gaming and producing music. I am happy in every aspect. The bass is clean and it doesn't mix or interfere with the rest of the frequencies. I have them plugged in a Scarlet 4i4 3rd gen sound card and even if I turn the volume knob all the way up from both the sound card and the speakers, I get a clean 95% if not 100% of the sound. For producing music, even though I don't have that much of experience, I experiment around with FL studio and I get a great outcome. I really like the touch with the logo on the front and the LED which let's you know whether they are on. Furthermore, when they power up again from standby mode, there is a small fade in of the sound, so you gradually reach the volume the knob is set to. It's an excellent choice and don't be discouraged by the plastic design.

B
Good in this price range

You aren't going to get absolutely neutral monitors in this price range. If you are getting these to mix or master on, you still have to learn how they are affecting the sound. They are very good for what they are: affordable but solid quality monitors. I especial like that the power supply on them can handle both American and European voltages. I had to leave my Yamaha monitors in the US when I moved to Germany, partly because they only take one type of voltage. These will most likely be coming with me if I ever move back to America.
