Music2me has created an unconventional, German-language music book to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, combining the concept of traditional sheet music with the didactic methods of the digital age. The online platform music2me is designed to combine the advantages of tried-and-tested educational materials with the opportunities offered by a modern approach to music education: Each book comes with an activation code for free access to the Beethoven module of the music2me piano course. Christopher Miltenberger, professor of Practical Piano Playing at the university of music (Hochschule für Musik) in Mainz, who was specially engaged for this project, explains and introduces the composer's compositions in 15 online lessons with over nine hours of video material, offering users invaluable advice on piano playing.
This German-language Beethoven music book can, first of all, be used like traditional sheet music. Accessible texts with interesting background information – combined with an entertainingly written biography and plenty of anecdotes – complement the music and provide a vivid picture of Beethoven's life and personality. Each piece is explained in depth via the detailed video lessons, which are all accessible via the codes in the book. University professor Christopher Miltenberger analyses the form, structure, and the musical context of each composition, demonstrates how to master it on the piano, and concludes every lesson with a musical performance of the piece.
The book is intended for beginners with about one year of experience, but also for more advanced piano players. The first piece is a beginner's version of the Ode to Joy, but the difficulty level goes all the way up to demanding works such as the first movement of the Sonata op. 49 No. 2 in G major. While the Ode to Joy corresponds roughly to the level of difficulty encountered in the first year of lessons, the Sonata in G major poses a challenge not to be underestimated, even for experienced piano players. Thanks to the in-depth background information and tips on how to practice the pieces, though, even the more difficult lessons are immensely valuable for musicians who have only recently started playing the piano, considering all the professional advice on piano playing and on Beethoven's music itself on offer – even if learners don't actually play the pieces themselves.
The online platform music2me was launched in 2011 by the renowned Jazz pianist Yacine Khorchi and was further developed together with professional musicians and teachers in German and English in order to change the way music enthusiasts of all ages learn an instrument without the barriers of fixed lesson times and high costs. The specially designed online courses each consist of over 250 learning videos. All learning content is conveyed in an appealing and up-to-date manner using modern technology. Together with a team of technically and musically versed employees, music2me has developed into one of the largest online learning programmes for guitar, piano and drums in the German-speaking world within the last decade.
Sometimes, even the most accomplished autodidact comes up against obstacles and ambiguities when practising – they may slow down the learning process and often can't be resolved without professional support. With the music2me Beethoven book, learners get high-quality instruction via video lessons to help them understand and work through each piece; and for further queries, the music2me support team is on hand free of charge to answer any questions. On the first page of each issue, there's an individual voucher for using the Beethoven module on music2me.de, providing access to all video lessons for free. To use the online module, all that's required is a playback device (PC, laptop, smartphone, or tablet) with an internet connection.
