11. Beginner Trumpets

Bb trumpet

The modern 3 valve trumpet was first developed by Bluhmel and Stoelzel at the beginning of the 19th century and is popular in school orchestras, jazz and brass bands. The Bb trumpet is the most common and so is the most sensible choice for the student or beginner. As with the flute, it requires good breath control.

It should be born in mind that the trumpet is a particularly loud instrument, and whilst mutes can be bought which reduce the volume, they do produce a lot of back pressure, and so practising with a mute alone is not advised. An alternative to standard mutes is the Yamaha Silent Brass system - this alleviates some of the back pressure, and also amplifies the sound so you can listen on headphones. Important accessories for the trumpet are valve oil and a cleaning kit to keep the instrument in good working order.
