A Swiss army knife for guitarists

The Strymon Iridium brings together amplifier and speaker simulation in a compact package. The Californian effects company's developers have combined an analogue preamp stage and a digital impulse response processor in a single pedal. It also features cab and room simulation options, thus allowing the entire "post-guitar" signal chain to be accommodated on the player's pedalboard. Three amplifier models and nine speaker options make a wide range of sounds available instantly, and the Iridium's flexible routing options and MIDI preset control provide the proverbial icing on the cake, making this pedal a veritable Swiss army knife for guitarists.

Strymon Iridium Amp & IR Cab

Plenty to choose from

At the core of the Strymon Iridium are three amp models that can each be combined with three speaker simulations. The "Round Amp" setting is modelled on a Fender Deluxe Reverb, the "Chime Amp" setting on a Vox AC30, and the "Punch Amp" (last but not least) on a Marshall Plexi. These three alone cover a wide palette of sounds, which is expanded even further by the speaker simulations. These have been calculated based on impulse responses and include numerous cabinets with Jensen, Celestion, and Fender speakers. What is more, the user can download their own impulse responses to the pedal. To top it all off, there are also three virtual reverb settings which provide simulations of different room sizes.

Strymon Iridium Amp & IR Cab, Detail

A helpful companion

Whatever the situation, the Strymon Iridium will be a helpful companion to both beginners and professionals: It lets players practise quietly at home and simplifies the recording process. Those who want to go on stage and enjoy those sounds that they have spend so much time programming at home and in the rehearsal room can also use it live, of course. The Iridium's flexibility is enhanced still further by the option of controlling different presets via a MIDI control and an additional footswitch. As you would expect from Strymon, the Iridium is designed for stereo operation. This doesn't just apply to the pedal's outputs - the input jack is also suitable for stereo connectors, so the Iridium will not leave you in the lurch if placed in front of stereo pedals in the effect chain.

About Strymon

The Californian effects pedal manufacturer Strymon was founded in 2004 under the name Damage Control and initially produced tube-driven pedals. In 2009, the name was changed to Strymon and the company began developing DSP effects, some of which have already achieved cult status. Classics such as the "Big Sky" reverb and the "Timeline" and "El Capistan" delays can be found not only on many a guitarist’s pedalboard, but also thrive in recording studios. The quality of Strymon products has become a byword and today they are also being used by keyboard players and DJs alike. Strymon has firmly established a reputation for uncompromising sound and excellent workmanship.

Great in combination

There are many options for those who want to use the Strymon Iridium on stage: It can of course be run directly into the PA using a DI box, in which case the Iridium provides the necessary amp, speaker and, optionally, room simulations. Alternatively however, the Iridium can be used as a modelling preamp and its signal fed into a power amplifier and speaker cabinet. As a final option, a guitar amplifier's preamp stage (or a preamp pedal) can be fed into the Iridium so that only the latter's speaker simulation is used, thus eliminating the need to mic up any cabinets.

Great sounding and easy to use

I was looking for an amp modeler for my recording and live setup and I've put this Iridium in my cart as soon as Thomann had it available because I trust so much on Strymon products.

I've had Kemper head, Hx stomp and Fractal AX8 (my favorite of them all), so I have quite an experience with modelers.

I've purchased the Iridium mainly for its pedal format and the ease of use. I didn't want to navigate through dozens of menus just to make a decent sound, neither I wanted a big all-in-one pedalboard because I go to gigs and rehearsals by bike or public transportation. Plus I already have some effect pedals.

The amps and cabinets sound great. Responsive to the touch and faithful to the sound they're emulating. Distorted sounds clean up really well with guitar volume knob and are easy to manage with the effective eq controls. The Marshall amp is very noisy with the gain past 2 'o clock, but I guess a real Marshall is not that quiet...

Anyway, I mostly play jazz through and AER compact amp and the Iridium sounds great before it. It gives the amp that valve feeling I've been missing for years. Sounds fantastic via studio monitors as well. I'm not quite satisfied about the room sounds, I would have preferred an actual reverb algorithm, but I can easily solve the problem by putting my ambient fx after the Iridium. Overdrive pedals sound very good before the Iridium, which behaves like a real amp.

Possible uses:
- Live without amps or as a backup in case your valve amp fails
- Live plugged in the return jack of your valve amp (without cab simulation), as it was a preamp
- In studio to record with a realistic sound without micing any amp or opening CPU-killersplugins.

P
The best solution for home players

I moved to an apartment and even with a small amp it is not practical to play in the evening at a decent volume.

I research theDSM Humbolt and several other units before going with the Strymon.
I have a lot of pedals to connect and wanted something that would take them well.
Several days worth of reviews later I chose the Iridium.

I purchased the Iridium to plug in a pedal board and listen through headphones. It does this incredibly well. There is enough variety in the 3 amps x 3 cabs to be able to dial in the tone you are looking for.

I haven’t experimented with loading 3rd party IR’s but don’t think it will be necessary. I’m using a decent pair of headphones and the sound is really full and the level control works well. You can crank this up to loud is more good levels.

I’m looking forward to getting into recording through this unit. As with other Strymon gear the quality is top notch.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to do some silent practice without sacrificing the quality of your sound. 5 stars.

OR
Great tool

I love it, i really really love everything about it.

Story from the studio: i played with two «65 amps» in stereo, but ended up using the iridium instead, because it just sounded so terribly good. And thats also because im used to that «direct» sound. It sits so freaking nice in a mix, compared to regular miced cabinets (sm57 + something else..). Especially when it comes to heavy effectized gitarsound from a huge pedalboard - tube amps dont handle the headroom from multiple delays and reverbs. At least not in my experience with mesa boogies or 65 amps (65 amps is so much tube-compression that you will melt away in beautiful harmony, or something).

Only really troubling downside of the iridium is that it actually has turned itself off when all settings is at full(full gain, full volume, full bass, full treble....) my guess is that i have it connected to the «voodoo labs digital power», wich is 400 mA. And iridium needs between 300 and 500 mA to deal with all possible tasks. So i guess i need to feed it 500mA to handle all settings to max. Btw, it can Djent! It definitely can djent. Even with a danelectro baritone with lipstick pickups.... just push it with an overdrive in front, and a tight noise gate after (fortin zuul). thats a lot of fun...

3 amps in one

Firstly, the build quality and switches are top quality. Really versatile Vox sounds with the Chime, with a built in treble boost to get classic Brian May sounds! The Marshall sounds are very Plexi sounding and a great choice of cabinets! The Fender ( or "Round" ) is a bit disappointing in my opinion, but, I think with other IR's you could get a more authentic sound.
The room echo is good, but would have preferred a spring reverb.
All in all, I am happy with my purchase!
