An industry reference

The AKG K702 is a reference-class open-back studio headphone model, offering a slightly flatter and more neutral frequency response than its sibling, the K701. Designed specifically for critical listening and professional audio applications, the K702 provides a wide and detailed soundstage, making it ideal for mixing, mastering, and analytical listening. Its plush velour ear pads fully enclose the ears, providing exceptional comfort even during extended sessions, while the genuine leather headband has been redesigned with a smooth, self-adjusting mechanism. This improvement addresses the "bumpy" headband of the K701, which some users found less ergonomic. The double-layer Varimotion diaphragms recreate precise and expansive stereo images, with a subtle high-frequency boost to capture fleeting transients and a balanced bass that is both accurate and well-defined - preserving the natural dynamics and detail of the original source.

Professional quality at an affordable price

The AKG K702 is held in high esteem across the audio industry, combining exceptional build quality and outstanding audio accuracy at a competitive price. Its neutral and well-balanced frequency response faithfully renders the entire audible spectrum, enabling quick and precise decision-making when editing, mixing, or mastering. Compared to the K701, the K702 delivers tighter bass and a more refined midrange, making it ideal for critical studio work. The wide stereo image and sensitive dynamics excel at analytical listening, revealing every nuance of the mix. The self-adjusting headband ensures comfort during long sessions, while the single-sided detachable cable reduces tangling - a practical feature for studio professionals.

AKG K-702 Professional and Hi-Fi headphones

For mixing, mastering, and production

As an open-back headphone model, the AKG K702 is perfectly suited for professional studio work, delivering an accurate and uncoloured representation of the source. This combination of transparency and consistency across multiple systems allow users to mix with confidence. However, due to its open design, the K702 provides minimal isolation from external noise, and sound leakage can sometimes be an issue in certain recording scenarios. Its refined sound signature, neutral frequency response, and natural transient reproduction make the K702 a go-to choice for professionals who demand uncompromising audio fidelity as well as long-term durability.

About AKG

AKG was founded in Vienna in 1947 by Dr. Rudolf Goerike and Ernst Pless. After only a few months, the first AKG microphones were already being used for the first time in radio stations and theatres. AKG’s big breakthrough occurred during the early 1950s, due to specific and sophisticated innovations in their field. One example is the first large diaphragm condenser microphone with a remote-controlled, switchable polar pattern (D12) – the first client to acquire them was the BBC in London. AKG is today a world-renowned brand in many different fields. With countless high-class products in its range, such as the well-known C414, the name AKG has always been synonymous with quality and outstanding sound.

AKG K-702 3m cable

For pros and amateurs alike

The AKG K702 performs equally well in the studio and for casual listening at home. While designed primarily for mixing and mastering, its low impedance of 62 ohms ensures compatibility with mobile devices, including those with a lower power output. Unlike the K701, the K702 features a detachable mini-XLR cable, making it easier to replace or upgrade as needed - a practical advantage for professional setups. The cable features a 3.5mm mini-jack with an included screw-on 6.35mm adapter for professional use, as well as a 3m cable providing ample freedom of movement. This combination of features makes the K702 a versatile and compelling choice for both studio settings and everyday listening at an affordable price.

Neutral Headphones great for producing
ockpii 01.08.2020
I use these headphones for mixing and a bit of mastering in my current studio situation. I spent hours listening to different genres of music to get a feel for how they translate and I was extremely pleased.

They offer great stereo imaging (some would say too wide, but you can use that to your advantage) and clarity both in terms of detail and in terms of frequencies.

I would say they're not the most comfortable of headphones. I'm speaking mostly in regards to the headband. They're not nearly as comfortable as, say, a pair of Beyerdynamic headphones. That being said, I'm sure they'll loosen up a bit with time, and if you take regular breaks (which are useful anyway to avoid ear fatigue), then that will not be a serious issue whatsoever.

Bear in mind that you will need to be extra cautious if you're planning on using this to track (or record) as well, as they're open by design, and do let sound spill out. This makes them more suited for the mixing/producing parts of the job.

Issue with Left earcup
kk34 17.12.2020
The sound of k702 is very clean and well balanced. I had no issues with using it and the comfort was always great for long hours. A standard DAC/AMP is good enough, no need to have expensive ones.
It is open back but no need to worry about losing bass as it is still there. Clarity of Mids/High are great for the price, well detailed but not too flat so you can still enjoy pop music,

But, after 6 months the left earcup stopped sounding. I believe its due to the cable soldering in around the detachable cable but its a bit unfortunate as the plastic build quality is well done for the outside.

Very good headphones. Sound is very clean, even bass. Very practical design and also body of headphones are flexible on every head and ears. I am using them in my home studio.
Pros: Long cable, dual jacks (3,5mm and reduction for 6,3mm). Outer rings of speakers are suitable around your ears.
Cons: After few months the joint, which connects jack cable with headphones caused disconnecting of left hearing side. Sent it back to thomann as a claim, after few weeks got it back with solved problem.

Nice and Flat
nksegos 29.09.2021
As far as budget "budget"-minded reference headphones, these take the cake. Crystal clear and neutral sounding along with a very spicy soundscape feeling thanks to their open back design. Of course the caveat is that these headphones are not made to be discreet and whatever you're listening to will noticeably bleed into your surrounding space, but that's the case with mostly all open back designs. At 62 ohms, it might be a worry that these won't perform very well without a dedicated DAC, but rest assured, a modern laptop or phone will drive them just as fine as it would a 32 ohm pair.

Overall, it is a great product for what it is supposed to be. A pair of sturdy, neutral sounding open back headphones. As long as someone goes in without expecting chunky bass frequencies and to have their playlist be private, then it would be very hard to be disappointed at this price.
