Compact monitor controller

The Behringer Control2USB is a compact and versatile controller for monitoring in every studio. Next to a large volume control aligned in the center of the user interface, the device also includes a talkback function, as well as a simple integrated audio interface. Users can connect up to three different stereo loudspeaker systems via symmetric line jacks, switching seamlessly between them without interfering noise. In addition to that, users can also input four stereo signals. With these options, users can listen to each of their tracks individually to achieve the best final result with great precision – whether a song is being mixed or mastered. Thanks to its flexible functions and its extensive capabilities, the Behringer Control2USB will prove its worth in many listening applications.

Outstanding monitor volume precision

The smooth encoder for volume control allows values to be adjusted with great precision, as the intervals between the degrees are considerably more generous than with smaller encoders. This results in a faster and even more precise adjustment of the overall listening volume, making mixing and recording (in particular) far easier. Unlike other manufacturers, Behringer uses their own Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA) technology, which is part of why the device is so extraordinarily precise. To enable sound reproduction that is faultlessly true to the original, the voltage that drives the amplifier is controlled directly. Two headphone amplifiers are to be found on the left side, next to the volume control, with corresponding output jacks on the front. Centrally, there are options for Mono, Mute, and Dim (-20dB). The right side is devoted to the talkback section, which can be aligned to different outputs while the corresponding buttons are held down.

Flexible functionality

The Behringer Control2USB is aimed at all mixing and mastering engineers – as well as studio owners – who value intuitive control, precision, and flexibility, while also looking for a solution for an affordable price. The Control2USB can adjust the different levels of connected loudspeaker systems individually, so that all of them play with the same volume. The talkback function, usually applied via the user interface, can also be controlled using a foot switch (sold separately). With the integrated audio interface, users can also record signals from external sources while the Behringer Control2USB is connected to a computer. For digitalising LPs, for instance, a record player can be connected on the rear side using the cinch inputs and also be grounded via a screw. With a weight of 2.4kg and a size of 39x20x8.7cm, this controller will take up a lot of space on a desktop, but even at this size, the user interface is uncluttered and easy to use..

About Behringer

The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. The acquisition of other companies, including Midas, Klark Teknik, and TC Electronic, meant that new product groups were added - and also resulted in the technical expertise of these companies being incorporated into product development.

Intuitive control during listening sessions

The buttons for selecting input and output channels are easy to find thanks to the Control2USB's well-arranged design, with a color-contrasting bar that runs right across the user interface. The third input channel also carries the signal coming from the computer, which means channel cannot be recorded in order to avoid a feedback loop. The level of the first three input channels can be set to +4dBu or 10dBV. Via the monitor mix input, the analogue signal of the DAW being used can be fed into this device, in order to circumvent the D/A converters and use the current setup's existing ones, which might be of a higher quality. The 12-digit LED meter offers visual feedback and can be switched to display the level of the input and output channels. The controller and its casings are very precisely engineered, with a solid body made of metal and plastic side plates.

I needed a monitor controller for my home studio but I was on a limited budget. I considered all the options in the under ¤200 range. I needed a controller for 2 sets of speakers (A/B) and one that would allow me, at a later stage, to add a sub-woofer. I also needed 2 Headphone outs. The only controller available in that price range that would fill my criteria was this Control2USB or its sister the Monitor2USB. I chose the Control for it's design & layout.
I have very good experience with Behringer gear and have found that they have improved significantly in quality in recent years. To date, I have never had an issue with any of their gear.

That said, now down to the unit itself. What can I say.... it is jam packed with features for a unit in this price range. Straight out of the well protected box, as is always the case with Thomann, this unit is big. It is aesthetically pleasing and is of a sturdy construction. It is very ergonomically well designed. All the buttons are very well located, feel good and respond well. The knobs feel a little cheap but function as intended. I find myself with my hand resting almost permanently on the massive Master Knob. Included are a USB cable for interface & firmware applications & an EU power cable. Thomann throw in a UK power cable free for countries that use this system of power such as Ireland.

Cons:
I have deducted 1 star as I would have liked to see Phantom 48v & also at least 1 XLR input for the interface applications. Also, on the Master Knob, the mark to show the current position is not visible from a seated position, something which has been mentioned in other reviews but should be easy to sort out for Behringer.

Pros:
Way to many to list. The amount of features is unbelievable in this price range. The build quality is surprising. It functions impeccably and will meet almost all requirements in any project, home or small/medium studio set up & it looks impressive.

If, like me, you are on a tight budget but require a unit that will allow your home or project set up grow with you, then this is the only controller you will ever need to purchase. I highly recommend! The next nearest rival is 2.5 times the price for almost no difference in features, functionality or ease of use. That and it, in my humble opinion, does not look as good as this unit.

A promising device, but eventually flaws got out

Use
I bought this device to control 2 monitors
Focal alpha 8

This unit did it with this task perfectly.

Clarity
All was good until a certain point, namely: the volume knob began to wheeze.

Pros
- price VS features
- can work as a sound card via USB (very useful sometimes)
- up to 3 different monitor pairs
- 4 stereo inputs with independent level - I connected my electronic drums, pads and soundcard, and I had one more input for some reasons (for DJ staff with RCA, for example)

Cons
- the volume knob is not reliable

Total
A very convenient and versatile device for its price, but over time can fail

KA
Did the engineer suffer from hearing loss?
Kalle A 30.06.2020
Edit: After just a few months of of use, all nobs are now cracking and hopping back and forth in level, as well as increasing the volume uneven for left and right. I wouldn't suggest this gear even to my worst enemy.

The phono preamp on this controller is so bad I wonder if the engineer that designed it either suffer from hearing imparement or never heard of the RIAA curve in the first place. while the midrange comes out correct, the 6000hz+ is almost 15dB too loud while the low range is lacking. I had to bypass the build in phono preamp and use the behringer ultra compact phono preamp to make this usable. so an extra device in the connection chain. TL;DR if you buy this with the idea of adding a record player to your setup, look elsewhere.

Exactly what I needed
Jonathan P 22.03.2022
Great for switching between multiple inputs and output. It has one big volume control and it is very easy to operate. It is bigger than I expected but does the job really well.
