Celestion G12 EVH 15 Ohm

I've had a problematic relationship with M magnet speakers for some reason, the ones I tried were either insanely harsh or insanely fizzy... Along came the Mojotone BV-25M which was neither, and it was a good sounding speaker but a bit too rounded and almost sounded like the cone wasn't moving as much as it should.

Anyway, the EVH is everything I want in a G12M speaker. It's clear, smooth and warm without being too polite or rounded. Even though Celestion have confirmed it is in fact rated for 25 watts and not 20w I would recommend not feeding much more than 12.5w to each speaker, unless you like speaker breakup of course. Running two or four of these in a 4x12 with a ≤50w amp is ideal, but I would be very careful with 100w amps (non-master volume especially). The low end can fart out if you send it too much power, but otherwise it's going to take a lot to push it into "unsafe territory" in a 4x12".

Does it sound exactly like a Pulsonic Greenback? I haven't tried one myself so I don't know for sure, but I have some experience with vintage Blackbacks and I prefer the EVH because it's smoother and more "pleasant". If you prefer rawer and more untamed tones you might disagree, but the EVH sounds more "like a record" IMHO. I think this speaker can work for almost every genre, sound and amp honestly, just depends on if you dig it or not. Excellent choice if you're a G12M Greenback guy, or just want to get off the beaten path of Vintage 30s.

Zwei Fakten vorweg:
1. Nur Eddie klingt wie Eddie
2. Der Speaker kann mich nicht nach Eddie klingen lassen (will ich auch gar nicht).
So....
Nun zu meiner eigentlichen Problemstellung, die der EVH gelöst hat (für Blues & Classic-Rock):
Für Proben nutze ich ein H+K Tubemeister 18 Top samt zugehöriger 1x12er mit einem V30-Speaker. Klingt für mich schon ganz ordentlich aber kleine Gigs, bei denen dann halt doch mal aufgerissen gespielt wird, fehlen mir noch zwei Dinge:
1. Etwas mehr Raum/Volumen
2. Wärme: Die V30 klingt mir teilweise etwas zu scharf und steril (v.a. bei höheren Gain-Settings)
Hab's demnach mit Greeenback und dem EVH als Alternative probiert, wobei beide im Alleinbetrieb jeweils wiederum für mich zu weich waren.
Lösung: eine zusätzliche 1x12 mit einem der beiden Speaker.
Kurzum: der EVH erfüllt genau das für mich , aber eben nur im Kombibetrieb mit der V30!
Der Sound ist nun so ausgewogen, wie ich mir das vorgestellt habe. Unten rum schön wuchtig und tight (jaja liebe 4x12-Fraktion: soweit man das halt von einer 2x12 Kombi mit 18 Watt erwarten kann; ich hab' die großen Klötze auch im Keller), die Mitten prägnant singend und die Höhen einfach weicher...best of both worlds.
Das kleine Stack singt nun, dass es eine wahre Freude ist!
Die Entscheidung für den EVH fiel einfach im direkten Vergleich ggü. dem Standard Greeenback, da der EVH für meinen Geschmack einfach noch einen Tick musikalischer klingt (fiel eben nur im direkten Vergleich auf, ist marginal und einfach mein persönlicher Geschmack).
Ich hoffe, das Review hiflt vielleicht dem Einen oder Anderen, aber am Ende bleibt's dabei:
auch der Sound des EVH-Speakers ist wie Alles im Leben: Geschmacksache!
