In the following, "right" and "left" always refer to the backside of the bassoon, facing the bassoonist.
Start with the boot. The boot has two adjacent holes, a narrower one (right) and a wider one (left), connected with a metal "U-shaped curve." Insert the wing into the narrower (right) hole and the bass joint into the wider (left) hole.
The wing and bass joint are held together with a locking mechanism. Attach the bell onto the bass joint. Finally, connect the S-bend to the wing. The bassoon is fully assembled.
Now, all that's left is the double reed, also known as the "reed," which is fitted onto the S-bend to produce a sound on the bassoon.
