An affordable way to start

Thomann FL-200 Flute

A good beginner's flute is distinguished by a wide range of sound dynamics and for being comfortable in the hands of any player. The Thomann FL-200 fulfils these criteria and is currently one of the most affordable flutes on the market. This flute makes a convincing case with good intonation in all registers, an easy response, and a centred sound. The headjoint, the body, and the mechanism consist of silver-plated nickel and are solidly manufactured. With this model, which has been available since 1999, Thomann offers a flute with an E-mechanism and an offset G. The scope of delivery includes a stable wooden case, a cleaning rod, and cork grease.

For those first notes on the flute

Thanks to its good intonation in all registers and solid manufacturing quality, the FL-200 is very suitable as a beginner's instrument. A fact worthy of mention is that the notes in the low registers don't drop in intonation and respond superbly. The notes in the third octave also intonate very steadily, so that it doesn't require excessive rotary adjustment. The flute is equipped with closed keys, which offer significantly greater comfort compared to open holes, as the fingers can lay more flexibly on the keys - an important condition for beginners to learn successfully. The FL-200C version is recommended for younger players, as it allows them to choose between a straight and a bent headjoint. This allows players with short arms to adopt a more relaxed playing position, as the distance between hands and body is shortened.

A great start

A flute should be designed in a manner that enables well-intonated and dynamic playing in all registers. The intonation possibilities shouldn’t be too extensive, but they should not be too limited either. For those who want to opt for the flute – whether as a beginner or coming from another instrument – the FL-200’s convincing price-performance ratio makes it a good choice. Many teachers value this flute as a learning instrument thanks to its great playing and sound qualities. For this reason, it is commonly found in music classes and music academies. Moreover, it is also suitable as a backup instrument for saxophonists and clarinettists.

About Thomann wind instruments

Thomann-brand instruments, which are exclusively built by renowned manufacturers, now constitute a large part of Thomann’s product range alongside numerous big-name brands. With unbeatable price-performance ratios, Thomann wind instruments are the obvious first choice for students and beginners – and others too. The technical features and uncompromising sound quality they offer are usually reserved for much more expensive instruments found in the professional market segment.

From a starting model to an open-air instrument

Until fairly recently, it was still hard to find a beginner’s flute that was both good AND affordable – but those days are thankfully over. Thanks to their pleasant playing and sound features and their reasonable price, Thomann’s flutes are becoming more and more popular, having also become serious competition for other manufacturers. With the FL-200, players get a solidly-built and versatile beginner instrument that is suitable for numerous different musical applications and perfect for learning the flute. Moreover, it can also serve as a second instrument during bad weather situations at open-air gigs.

Amazing bang for the buck!
Anonymous 20.02.2016
I bought this product as an introduction to the flute, since I am a saxophonist and wanted to double on the flute.

I ordered the flute, and two days later it already arrived at my door. Thomann Immediately shipped the item, only 10 minutes after I ordered it.

The flute is amazing quality for the money, for only 148 euro you get a perfect study flute or a backup flute. Intonation is good, the sound is good, the mechanism feels nice under the fingers. The only con I can find is that the case feels very cheap to the touch and also has a very strong smell, but it will do the trick. Don't expect a flute that will be sufficient for a first chair orchestra position, but in small groups, to practice or just as a backup you won't find a better one. I feel that this flute gives you a lot, maybe the most, bang for the buck out there!

If you want to play flute, and aren't sure to fully commit yourself to the instrument or wan't a backup, just grab this one!

beautiful sounding flute
70skid 22.05.2014
Before I bought this thomann FL 200 flute I did a lot of listening to the different flutes on thomanns site. I settled on this particular model because of the sound quality and purity of the notes I was hearing. When I received the flute and put it together and played it I was not disappointed. The sound quality of this instrument is beautiful. The tone is clear and pure which is amazing for the price.Tthere were other flutes that were much more expensive but this one has all you could want out of a flute.
It takes a bit of getting used to, putting the flute together and taking it apart which takes some patience as you don't want to damage your flute. The feel of the flute is very comfortable on the fingers and all the buttons moved easily. It looks well made and a lot of effort seems to have gone into the design and manufacture of it.Tthe cleaning rod is necessary to go with it. it must be cleaned every time you play it before you put it away and a good case is necessary too.
I would highly recommend this even for beginners. It should last years and from the tone it produces I can't see the need to upgrade to a new one at all.
Go for this flute model and you will enjoy many years of music making from it.

Great Flute for Begginers
MattPol 31.01.2019
My sister bought this flute to have one of her own to practice on. I tried it out for her when it first arrived and the flute had good intonation and responded throughout the entire range. She has no difficulties with the instrument and feels that it will allow her to progress in her studies. Her teacher also finds it to be a good flute for her. My only issue with it is that the joints are a bit stiff when taking it apart.

The case is not the best though... There are no pouches for cleaning cloths, cleaning rod or screwdriver which are always great to have on your person when travelling with a flute. Instead the case requires the cleaning rod to be held inside the body of the flute itself which may scratch the flute.

KY
It's good but smells very bad
Kristina Y 04.06.2024
I am new to flutes and this is my first flute. Maybe it is because of the material which is made of, but it smells very bad of metal. It leaves scent on my fingers and even when it is closed in the box it still smells in the room.
