The entry into the world of flutes

front of the Startone SFL-55 Flute

A good beginner's flute is distinguished by a wide range of sound dynamics and for being comfortable in the hands of any player. The Startone 55 fulfils all these criteria and is currently one of the most affordable flutes on the market. This flute makes a convincing case with good intonation in all registers, an easy response, and a warm sound. With this model, which has been available since 2006, Thomann offers a flute with an E-mechanism and an offset G. The scope of delivery includes a case, protective cover, cleaning rod and cork grease.

For your first notes on the flute

Thanks to its good intonation in all registers and solid manufacturing quality, the Startone 55 is very suitable as a beginner's instrument. A fact worthy of mention is that the notes in the low registers don't drop in intonation and respond superbly. The notes in the third octave also intonate very steadily, so that excessive rotary adjustment is not required. The flute is equipped with closed keys, which offer significantly greater comfort compared to open holes, as the fingers can lay more flexibly on the keys - an important condition for beginners to learn successfully.

A great start

A flute should be designed in a manner that enables well-intonated and dynamic playing in all registers. The intonation possibilities shouldn’t be too extensive, but they should not be too limited either. If you want to opt for the flute – whether as a beginner or coming from another instrument – the Startone 55’s convincing price-performance ratio makes it a good choice. Many teachers value this flute as a learning instrument thanks to its great playing and sound qualities. Moreover, it is also suitable as a backup instrument for saxophonists and clarinettists.

About Startone

The Startone brand is exclusive to Thomann and was established in 2005 in order to offer high-quality, playable instruments for ambitious beginners even in the lowest price bracket. This resulted in a steadily growing range of wind instruments for beginners, which has since expanded to include keyboard and stringed instruments, accordions, and even drum sets. The product range combines proven quality with low prices – and Thomann naturally provides a full three-year warranty on all Startone instruments. The brand's mission is to always provide the motivated beginner with a reliable, good-quality first instrument at an unbeatable price.

Starting model or open-air instrument

Until fairly recently, it was still hard to find a beginner’s flute that was both good AND affordable – but those days are thankfully over. Thanks to their pleasant playing and sound features and their reasonable price, Startone’s flutes are becoming more and more popular, having also become serious competition for other manufacturers. With the Startone 55, you get a solidly-built and affordable beginner instrument that is suitable for numerous different musical applications and perfect for learning the flute. Moreover, it can also serve as a second instrument during bad weather situations at open-air gigs.

Not for musicians.

I bought this for my wife who had a Chezch flute before since her childhood, and that flute is very very used, the pads are almost fully worn, have holes in them, etc. I hoped this one will be a great substitute, but it disappointed. The low voices just do not come out of it. We took it to service 3-4 times, but it did not really get better. The sound of it is much less powerful/cool as the old Czech flute, the quality of the parts is also lacking. Honestly the best part of this flute is the sturdy and very nice case.

It's not for professional use, it's for a hobby.

Doesn't have the best sound but it is very good sounding flute.
For the price it costs if you don't have much money it's a buy.

You can use it for professional recording but there are some much better.
I would record it and do some sound modifying in the pc.

Cheap & Cheerful

As a student flute I can honestly say it is mediocre. However the price is so low that to expect anything else would be wishful thinking. Its ok for a toot, maybe 'Knights in White Satin'! but don't expect too much. The old saying is- Buy Cheap and you Buy Twice.
