The best small diaphragm condenser mic for the budget
Anonymous 16.02.2016
USE:
The Rode NT5 S is a small diaphragm condenser mic that has cardioid characteristic and frequency range from 20Hz to 20kHz. It has frequency response mainly flat with little low shelving from 100Hz and high shelving from 4kHz.

SUMMARY:
These mic can give you the kind of performance that far exceeds what you'd expect from condensers at this price range. The NT5 S is an excellent mic for recording practically any instrument and voice too.

PROS:
1- Comes with windshield, standmount and case.
2- Full frequency response.
3- Low self noise.
4- Excelent price from Thomann.
5- Can work with the NT45-O interchangeable omnidirectional capsule.
6- Freedom to use it live or studio.
7- The built in quality will surprise you, from home to studio projects, this is a professional mic.
8- The amazing 10 year warranty from Rode when registered!

OPINION:
I ordered this mic from Thomann because i wanted to record my acoustic fingerstyle guitar EP with mid-side technique. In conjunction with the Rode NT2-A, the Rode NT5 S is the best addiction you can have. Same brand from the same store, super quality!
I recommend you not to mod this mic because you'll loose the Rode warranty. If you are so concerned about its sound, you can search for other alternatives such the recording mic positioning, room treatment, plugins or even your guitar/whatever.

Go for it, i'll never regret and you'll never sell it :)

Great on many instruments
Anonymous 07.10.2015
I absolutely love this mic, I will most likely sell this individual one and buy a matched pair as soon as I can afford it. I use it mostly on acoustic guitar, and especially my Martin sounds absolutely amazing through one of these. I use it on several types of whistles and other wind instruments as well, the included pop cap comes in handy in those situations to prevent wind noise, and the sound is very detailed. Shaker sounds good, haven't tried other percussion though. I've used it to record a guitar amp as well which was okay, but nothing special. A combination of SM57 and a decent LDC still works a lot better.

I even recorded my own vocal through this just to see what would happen, but that didn't work out too well: the s sounds were incredibly sibilant, which is to be expected for this kind of mic.

Quality sound at a quality price
Douggie 28.04.2015
When reviewing the Rode Nt5's the focus should be how great they sound for the money. It wouldn't be fair to compare these to other high end mics. But I will tell you that if you are considering other budget small diaphragm condensers, don't! These are great mics. Even before you try them, the build quality is on par with mics costing 4 times as much. Built like tanks, clips are very tight and sturdy, and the case is great.
On to the sound, very well balanced, What is very important is to pair these with a good preamp. A high quality preamp will make them shine. They really excel on acoustic guitar, hi hat, and do as overheads. If these are what your budget allows then you will be extremely happy. These mics are usable no matter what other high end mics you may have. You can always find a place for these.

Handling always been an issue with Thomann
Musician in a studio 16.04.2021
One of the matched pair seems to have a loose nail inside which makes noise that is not quite the greatest thing to have while you are recording.

anyway this is not the first time to have a problem with Thomann since previously they shipped a damaged packaging of an audio interface (Apollo arrow) the device working well but with future concerns :)

I would pick it up from another supplier actually for the sake of quality handling as it is quite a nice mic for its price.
