Affordable hazer with advanced features

Let's get it straight right away: No, this is not a fog machine. The Hz-200 Compact Hazer DMX produces an almost invisible haze. When a spotlight is shone on the haze, the entire cone of light turns visible, much as it does when the ambient humidity is high. The haze generator was developed by Thomann's in-house brand Stairville, is relatively inexpensive, and comes with several features for professional use: It does its job either in a free-standing position or suspended from a mounting bracket. Among other operating modes, it can be controlled via DMX. The direction of haze emission can be adjusted manually, and last but not least, the Hz-200 Compact Hazer DMX is ready to go after a comparatively short warming-up period.

Invisible haze for visible light

The Stairville Hz-200 Compact Hazer DMX provides a nearly invisible haze that enhances lighting effects. The heating element has an output of 615 watts and the unit is ready to go after only about one and a half minutes. A hazer creates an effect whose impact only builds up gradually after the nebulised fluid has dispersed into the ambient air. The hazer weighs 7.5kg and measures 280 x 330 x 380mm including filler and bracket. The tank has a capacity of 1.2 litres (suitable fluid is available separately). The Stairville Hz-200 Compact Hazer DMX can be controlled via DMX, with the DIP switches on the unit, or with the wired remote control. The latter is already included in the scope of delivery. The position of the tenth DIP switch is of importance. If the DIP switches are used, this must be set to "On", for the other two operating modes, it must be set to "Off".

For small and medium-sized areas

The Stairville Hz-200 Compact Hazer DMX is designed to help club owners, concert promoters, and bands on small and medium-sized indoor stages to enhance the impact of existing lighting effects. The benefit in terms of cost savings is that with a single hazer, the effect of all available light is visibly magnified. The room appears fuller and the colours seem richer and thicker, because both the illuminated area and all the light cones of the spotlights used in the club are made visible. The on-stage sound hides the operating noises that the unit generates. At the beginning of the evening, as the club gradually fills up, the hazer creates a feeling of intensity, as though the guests were in the middle of a night of nonstop dancing.

About Stairville

Since it was introduced in 1994, Thomann’s in-house brand Stairville has been a permanent fixture in the store’s product range. The brand primarily focuses on the field of stage lighting in general, and its products include spotlights, moving lights, and theatre lighting as well as smoke machines, electronic control systems, and every other accessory you can think of. Thomann constantly has around 1,600 Stairville products on offer, and the figures speak for themselves: Statistically, one in every fifteen Thomann customers owns at least one Stairville product. Incidentally, the name “Stairville” is also a catchy English translation of “Treppendorf”, the town that Thomann calls home.

"Wow" effects

Bands can take the Stairville Hz-200 Compact Hazer DMX on the road, and it is small enough to fit on any concert stage: Just place it at the side and turn it so it is facing slightly into the performance area. For even more of a directional effect, the outlet flap can be lifted. The time during soundcheck is ideal to figure out the best setup position. For instance, the beginning of a quiet song could then look like this: The stage is in total blackness, then the lights slowly fade in from the backdrop onto the edge of the stage. The black silhouette of the singer is visible at the centre of the stage, with light falling on their shoulders from behind. Then finally, a spotlight from the front illuminates their face during the first chorus.

A
HZ-200 Hazer

So I?ve waited a couple of months before writing this review so I can update on the problems I found

I play in a typical 5 piece pub band so venues can vary from small little pubs where we?re shoved in a corner to occasional functions / weddings etc in larger halls. Using haze really makes a huge improvement to the visual aspect of the band, we don?t have many lights and only cheaper ones but haze just makes them pop out and really gives atmosphere.

The 1st gig we did with haze was a very large pub/club with their own built in lights and it was incredible, using the unit stand alone with the supplied remote control to vary amount of haze and interval. The haze was fine and light, no adverse effects on the singer.

The next gig was a small-ish pub and I couldn?t get the hazer to produce a low enough level of haze, even on minimum settings it was too much for the small pub so I had to keep switching it on /off during songs (on the remote) no major problem but was a pain. we only want a very fine level of haze not a thick fog type effect.

I then decided to go to DMX control from the laptop, which we always have on for playing background music before, in between and after sets. A £5 dmx cable, freestyler software (free) and ½ hour working out how to do DMX and I can now have much better control of the haze and get it really low for very small venues. This problem is only relevant in SMALL pubs, the sort of place that is a squeeze for a 5 piece band. I?d seriously recommend running DMX as its so much more controllable than the handset but the handset does work ok.

Now we?re running haze via DMX we use it at every gig and we absolutely love it! We?re looking into better lights and lasers now to make the most of it. It uses hardly any fluid, I can?t believe how little it uses. 5ltrs will last so many gigs. Without DMX we couldn?t use it at every gig and the review would be worse, but still good. I think this low output is a problem on all budget hazers and for £5 to run DMX its worth doing.

Seems pretty decent so far.
Tested it yesterday during a 3h+ band rehearsal in a room of about 75m3 of stage space. I used it mostly faded on DMX mode.
It doesn't take long to warm-up. If you use it cued, however, expect a small delay between tracks.
It's a bit noisy but not as much as to be a problem while the band plays its calm parts. There was a repeated pulse-like knock while both dip-switched and remote controled but nothing other than the usual operating noise while faded.
The amount of haze is very satisfying. When on 100%, the effect you get is more fog-like at first but if faded, you get a very pretty haze that lingers on.
After about 2 hours of continuous use, I can't see the change on its fluid levels. It should last for a few shows, even if abused.
The box looks good and sturdy, like it could last for quite a few in and outs if treated properly in the hands of a touring band.
Considering its price and category, I think it's a good choice.

pros, very good quality, does not turn off if you push it too much
the yellow button auto timer its so helpfull you just find the settings after 1 gig and boom... you dont have anything to worry... creates enough haze , the fan has great power but a bit noisy,(dont mind if you play loud)

cons...
the recomended liquid gives me sorethroat , it makes my throat dry, you can have dry throat that leads to voice cracks when u sing... some times the next day of the gig i feel sick ...
