Power over Ethernet

The Swissonic Stage Switch POE is a 19-inch rack-format network switch that provides standard Ethernet connectivity geared towards professional event technology and permits the use of such network protocols as AVB, DANTE, and SoundGrid. It is equipped with 16 GB Ethernet ports which can be used with Cat5e cables up to 100 m long to provide transmission rates of up to 1000 Mbps. On its front are eight lockable Ethercon ports, which allow devices to be connected “on the fly” in no time. On the rear panel, eight RJ45 ports are available for hardwired Ethernet connections. As an additional noteworthy feature, these ports will power PoE-capable devices up to a maximum of 15 W per port. The Stage Switch automatically detects whether or not this feature can be enabled, depending on the connected device. All the operating controls of this 1RU unit are conveniently located on its front panel. LEDs also indicate the network and transmission status of each port.

Seamless integration

Thanks to its internal PSU, powering the Swissonic Stage Switch POE only requires a power twist cable, as opposed to an external power adapter. A handy power twist output socket for relaying power is also included. This allows the Stage Switch POE to be integrated seamlessly into existing PA installations or live racks. In addition, both power twist sockets provide a high level of fail safety thanks to their locking design. Meanwhile, the “auto-negotiation” and “flow control” features ensure the stability of data synchronisation via Ethernet, since the speed of a connection is limited to the data transmission speed limit of the receiver.

For beginners and occasional small network users

The Swissonic Stage Switch POE is “unmanaged”, meaning the device is pre-configured and as such will suit the needs of its users “as is”. It is therefore aimed primarily at beginners and occasional users who operate comparatively small networks and have little or only moderate IT network knowledge. In return, however, they will have to do without certain features that are available on professional “managed” switches, such as remote control and more in-depth analysis functions. Despite these limitations, the network provided by the Stage Switch can be used with a considerable number of end devices, since it can handle up to 8,000 MAC addresses – the management of which is regulated by auto-learning algorithms for the sake of simplicity.

About Swissonic

Launched in 1998, Swissonic is an in-house brand operated by Thomann. Swissonic's range of electronic and digital devices are built to precise specifications by well-known manufacturers and are thus available at very favourable prices via direct marketing without distributors. Swissonic mainly focuses on devices for use in conjunction with a computer. The product range therefore includes interfaces, webcams, monitoring speakers, MIDI keyboards, and routers but also sound converters and rack-mounted electronic equipment. Swissonic thus provides an extensive wide range of affordable equipment for computer and home studio-based sound processing.

Network basis

The Swissonic Stage Switch POE will integrate mobile mixing consoles into existing networks effortlessly, so that mixing functionalities are enabled almost immediately. The switch also provides digital multicore systems and stage boxes with data streams. For those requiring large numbers of Waves plug-ins processed by the DSPs of an external server rather than by the live or studio DAW, for example, the Stage Switch will provide the basis for the Waves SoundGrid architecture. Of course, the Swissonic Stage Switch POE can also be used as a contact hub when integrating WLAN routers. Incidentally, the Stage Switch’s 19-inch rack-mount format and its compact 1RU size are not the only things that make it road-worthy: Its metal casing and front panel also ensure that the device is robust enough to handle extensive travel. What is more, since its weight barely exceeds 2 kg, it will prove no burden during transport as part of a mobile setup.

In the spotlight: PoE

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is a technology that allows network cables not only to transmit data but also to supply power to connected devices. The prerequisite is that these “powered devices” (PD) can function at a given voltage. This technology can eliminate the need for power cables and therefore makes for much tidier racks. One disadvantage of PoE is that it can only supply devices which function at comparatively low wattage, not exceeding 25.5 W. This makes PoE technology particularly suitable for small devices such as small hubs and servers, as well as WLAN or Bluetooth devices.

Finally a simple unmanaged switch with ethercon ports that doesn't break the budget. This thing is a winner. I wish they were in stock because I'd order more.

MOTU AVB does not work
Maurice Moss 31.12.2021
I have not been able to establish an AVB network between a MOTU interface and Mac using shielded Cat5e cables (AVB works directly between the Mac and MOTU)

Unfortunately this renders it useless for my purposes.

Endlich!
