A first-class travel guitar

There are countless travel guitars, and plenty of parlour guitars too. All these instruments are smaller than standard guitars – unfortunately though, none of them exactly look or sound very sexy. Taylor's GS Mini series, on the other hand, is a category all of its own: They are smaller and more manageable than full-size guitars, but they deliver more volume than travel guitars and, most importantly, players don't have to compromise on sound. Taylor has achieved this with the GS Mini Mahogany's relatively large yet incredibly manageable body, and as its name suggests, the model shown here has a top made of warm-sounding mahogany. And as if that weren't enough, the guitar can be made stage-ready in seconds with a special sound hole pickup.

Little baby brother

The Taylor GS Mini Mahogany is a scaled-down version of the Taylor GS, which also lends the Mini its round, voluminous appearance. It has a scale length of 23.5" (59.7cm), which is 2" (or 5cm) shorter than that of full-scale instruments. Taylor's patented "relief rout" and ingenious X-bracing give excellent dynamics to the rich, warm sound provided by the aforementioned mahogany top, and the back and sides in turn are made of laminated wood, with the outer layer consisting of sapele. Taylor also uses sapele for the neck, which is joined to the body with Taylor's proprietary screw construction, and as with all Taylors, the GS Mini's fingerboard is made of ebony. With this combination of woods, the GS Mini Mahogany generates a deep, full-sounding tone that is also perfect for fingerstyle playing.

Great sound even on the go

No true guitarist wants to leave their beloved instrument at home when they're travelling, which is where the Taylor GS Mini Mahogany comes in: With its scale length of just under 60cm, players can look forward to an incomparably relaxed playing feel wherever they take it. Other travel guitars can be considerably smaller, and some might even fit into a rucksack – but who wants that? Passionate guitarists want a guitar with a great sound. Despite its size, the GS Mini Mahogany has a punchy,full-bodied sound that can really hold its own against larger "orchestra" models. And when the time comes to take it travelling, a sturdy gig bag is included in the price.

About Taylor Guitars

Taylor Guitars was co-founded by Bob Taylor in California in 1974 and from the outset specialised in the construction of high-quality acoustic guitars. By focusing on state-of-the-art manufacturing methods and very high standards of quality, Taylor Guitars has made it into the top echelon of fine guitar makers. Names such as Taylor Swift, Leo Kottke, Prince, David Gilmour, and former US President Bill Clinton are a testament to the popularity of the instruments, which are also reputed for their playability. The creation of a second workshop in Mexico has meant that Taylor guitars are also in the mid-priced segment.

From the beach to the fireplace to the sofa

Of course, a travel guitar wants to be out on the road, and the Taylor GS Mini Mahogany is designed specifically for just that – it's not only easy to handle, but also extremely robust thanks to its laminated body. So it doesn't matter whether it is being played by the campfire on the beach or by the fireplace in a log cabin, or whether the player wants to curl up with it on the sofa (not a good idea with a dreadnought!) or enjoying a quick bit of songwriting at their desk: It's a great guitar to have close to hand just about anywhere that a high-quality, compact instrument is needed. And thanks to its easy-to-fit pickup – available separately – the guitar can even be taken on stage!

TLDR: Looks and plays great
matejc 02.11.2021
Bought this as an upgrade from Harley Benton Custom Line CLA-16SCE. I wanted better playability. The HB sounds good, but something really is missing (think John Mayer :) - it has like a scooped midrange. Probably has to do with wood (or strings). Playability was not that great despite numerous attempts to set it up and string changes. Probably would have to be set up professionally by a luthier.

I wanted a Taylor, but was not willing to spend the 1000s required.

GS mini is so nice, directly from the box. I only had to tune it.

Pros:
Watched reviews on YT and I really liked the tone of the mahogany top GS mini, and, in contrast, the looks of spruce top GS mini. Well, the full mahogany looks much nicer in real life as opposed to what it looks like on the photos. Glad I went with this option. Satin/natural finish is my kind of finish.

The sound is really good for this size. It smells nice too.

Cons:
The tuners are only ok, we will see how they hold the tuning. Probably will be replaced in the future.

There is minor fret buzz on G string around 12th fret. A tiny bit. Maybe the bridge will have to be shimmed a little bit or this will go away once the neck settles (it came detuned for shipping).

It came with a few (2) very, very small dings and a scratch - one on the top of the headstock; one on the fretboard; and a 1cm scratch on the side, near the right strap button. Very minor, barely noticeable from 30cm away. The scratch is more visible, and I am picky. Will try to polish it out.

p
Great guitar
pernikov 23.02.2022
The guitar is amazing. Great value for the price. There are just 2 slight cosmetic imperfections - one small recess (1-2mm) along the trailing edge at the back and the pickguard is glued slightly crooked (1-2mm). Compared to the value of the instrument this is nothing and if I just wasn't expecting perfection from Taylor, I would've given 5 stars everywhere.
