The XVive U5 Wireless Audio System for video productions allows users to wirelessly transmit the audio signal from a lavalier microphone or DSLR camera to up to two receivers. The set comprises a transmitter that can be mounted on a camera, a receiver, a matching lavalier microphone with an omnidirectional polar pattern, a microphone windscreen made of foam, and further accessories for a wide range of applications. The XVive U5 Wireless Audio System operates in the open ISM 2.4GHz frequency band and can therefore be conveniently used worldwide, which makes it an ideal companion for video producers who want to travel abroad, e.g. for documentaries. All in all, this comprehensive set offers a compact, easy-to-use, and versatile solution for wireless transmission at an extremely affordable price.
The transmitter features a puristic layout with only five front-facing control elements: The Mute button turns off the volume of the mic input, the Plus and Minus buttons change the input gain level, the Channel button allows one of the six channels to be selected, and the Mic/Line button switches between the mic and line input levels. The On/Off switch on the side of the transmitter can also be used to set the entire unit to hold mode in order to disable the control elements and prevent accidental actuation during use. The transmitter features an OLED display at the top that provides information about the unit's battery status, channel selection, gain, clipping, and mute status, as well as a signal input for connecting the included XVive L1 lavalier microphone. The L1, which captures sound with a frequency response of 30Hz to 20kHz and a sensitivity of -32dB (+/-3dB), easily blends into just about any video recording setup thanks to its slim, matt black design.
The receiver comprises two front-facing knobs for controlling the output gain of the two channels with a range of -54dB to +24dB as well as a switch between the knobs that allows the receiver mode to be changed from mono to stereo and vice-versa. At the top of the receiver, users are provided with two buttons for channel selection, two corresponding buttons for muting the output channels either simultaneously or independently of each other, and an OLED display that provides information about the unit's battery status, channel selections, gain, clipping, and mute status. The receiver is capable of receiving input signals from up to two transmitters, and provides a stereo output that allows the audio signal to be sent to a camera or an audio device. If only one transmitter is used, the receiver should be operated in mono mode.
The XVive U5 Wireless Audio System is eminently suited to content productions such as vlogs, news reports, documentaries, interviews, live webinars, and many more. The receiver features two antennae that ensure true diversity reception for excellent signal stability, and the included lavalier microphone makes a convincing case thanks to its natural frequency response that delivers a crystal-clear bass and treble response with minimal distortion. The receiver can be easily mounted on a camera using the shoe mount adapter that is included in the set, and the transmitter comprises a clip that allows it to be firmly secured to the user's belt. The high-quality U5 Wireless Audio System boasts an extremely low latency of just under 6ms between transmitter and receiver.
Xvive Audio officially entered the market in 2012 with its compact U2 wireless guitar system. Since then, the company has also been involved in the development of wireless microphone technology. Its catalogue also includes effects pedals, such as the Signature Series, which were developed in partnership with guitarist Thomas Blug. The products are designed by an American team, based in Pasadena, California, which is composed of musicians and engineers and draws on decades of professional experience. Its lead designer, Howard Davies, was previously employed at Electro Harmonix and Pigtronix, among others. Xvive Audio's goal is to create products that deliver exceptional sound and build quality, while remaining affordable for any musician.
The transmitter signal can be sent to up to two receivers, which offers the flexibility to use either two video cameras or one video camera and an additional multi-track recorder or mixing console, and thus ensures reliable recording with high signal quality in every setup scenario. The transmitter's 3.5mm input allows a lavalier microphone or an alternative signal source to be connected, so users are free to choose to include signals from an audio player or a mixing console, for example. The XVive U5 Wireless Audio System can also be expanded by adding further XVive components in order to specifically tailor the audio recording setup to the requirements at a film set. Suitable products offered by XVive include the U5T transmitter, the U5R receiver, additional LV1 and LV2 lavalier microphones, and the U5C battery charger.
